SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Alisha Anwar was named the St. Francis tennis team most valuable player at the team's annual banquet. The program celebrated one of their top seasons in school history that including a league title, section finalist appearance and CIF NorCal/USTA semifinals finish.
Anwar went a combined 15-5 playing at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions during the season, earning the MVP honors. Senior Roya Pahlavan was selected for the Team Spirit Award, while classmate Myra Anwar received the Leadership Award. Freshman Safaa Umar was named the recipient of the Dedicated Award.
Junior Samantha Sontag was selected for the Realizing Your Potential Award for her improved impact on the team.
2018 Tennis Highlights
- St. Francis went 21-3 overall on the season and 12-0 in the Delta League to win the league title, capturing the title for the 29th time in school history and fourth consecutive.
- The St. Francis tennis team lost 4-3 in the semifinals of the CIF/USTA Northern California Regional Championships to Los Gatos. It was the third consecutive CIF NorCal appearance for the program.'
- The Troubadours equaled the best finish in school history with their fifth NorCal semifinal appearance. St. Francis had also advanced to the semifinals in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2017.
- The team lost in the Sac-Joaquin Section final to Rocklin (5-4), reaching the section finals for the third consecutive season.
- Coach Kristi Spector was named the Delta League Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season.
- Junior Adithi Benush won the Delta League Singles title with a win over teammate Alisha Anwar, while juniors Bianca Ariza and Samantha Sonntag combined to win the Delta League Doubles title. Benish advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals, while Ariza/Sonntag reached the quarterfinals.
