Gutierrez wins Grizzly 3,200 with historic time

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Freshman Alyssa Gutierrez captured the overall girls' individual title at the Grizzly 3,200 cross country meet with a winning time of 10 minutes, 37.36 seconds, fifth in St. Francis history and the best in SF annals by a freshman.

The meet, although held as part of the cross country season, essentially takes the form of a track meet with only the 3,200-meter race for both boys and girls. Eight sections of girls' times (11 for the boys) were then compiled for an overall set of standings. The fastest heats went first, meaning the top finishers in the first heat stayed as the meet's leaders.

Gutierrez finished more than 1.5 seconds ahead of Davis' Avery Work (10:38.88), who in turn edged Vista Del Lago's Brenna Mannion (10:39.06). Two Troubadour sophomores, Halle Welch and Miya Menza, finished seventh (11:07.91) and eighth (11:14.44), respectively. Another 10th-grader, Sophia Kadel, won the second heat at 11:18.11 for 10th overall.

Other SF runners in the first heat were freshman Rebecca Dickson, who placed 16th overall at 11:24.37; and junior Sunny Schranz, who took 25th with a 11:37.94 time. In addition to Kadel, four other Troubies from the second section cracked the 12-minute threshold: Mia Hollar in 21st overall (11:32.80), Holly Thorall in 22nd (11:34.08), Chloe Harrison in 24th (11:37.65) and Bianka Bagatelos in 29th (11:45.21).

Gutierrez' 10:37.36 makes her the ninth Troubie to cover 3,200 in faster than 11 minutes. She has the fastest mark by any SF athlete since Cate Joaquin's 10:20.97 in 2022, ranking behind Sydney Vandegrift (10:32.12 at the 2017 Arcadia Invite) and ahead of Grace Dunham (10:42.63).

Impressively, all past runners on the school's 3,200 top 10 list went on to run for NCAA Division I programs: Joaquin at Georgetown, Lauren LaRocco (10:23.10) at Portland, Peyton Bilo (10:31.67) at Cal Poly, Vandegrift at Cal, Dunham at UC Davis, and Miranda Myers (10:58.15) at Northern Arizona. Menza now moves down to eighth (10:58.97), with Ole Miss alumna Madison Rawson to ninth (10:59.85) and current UC Santa Barbara harrier Ryann Strawn holding the 10th spot (11:03.35).
