St. Francis wins Prandini title at Clovis Invite

St. Francis wins Prandini title at Clovis Invite
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Alyssa Gutierrez finished fifth overall with a time of 17 minutes, 30.1 seconds, leading St. Francis to the team title in the Carlo Prandini Girls' Championship 5-kilometer race at the 46th running of the Clovis Invitational high school cross country meet Friday.

Additionally, Holly Thorall won the girls' Division 4-6 frosh-soph race at 19:50.0, leading five Troubadours among the top seven finishers for a near-perfect score of 20 points. Finally, senior Jordan Brace won the Div. 4-6 junior varsity 5K at 20:41.8, with three total Troubies placing among the top nine en route to a second-place finish.

The Prandini race, named for the legendary Clovis High coach and athletics director, gathers the top small-school programs in the two-day meet. The Troubadours scored 92 points overall, besting Santa Margarita (109), Archie Williams (121), Oak Park (125) and Redwood (130) at the top of the 16-team leaderboard.

After Gutierrez, SF fielded a relatively tight pack of scorers who crossed within a 14-second span. Sophomore Halle Welch took 24th overall at 18:26.5, with junior Sunny Schranz following five places behind at 18:30.5. Two more Troubie 10th-graders, Sophia Kadel (18:34.2) and Miya Menza (18:40.6), placed 32nd and 33rd, respectively. Freshman Rebecca Dickson finished in 43rd (19:03.5) and Mia Hollar entered the chute in 63rd (19:33.2) as St. Francis' two displacers.

Thorall finished more than 20 seconds ahead of runner-up and sophomore teammate, Emily Colonnello, who posted a 20:10.5. Emilia Ryan followed in fourth (20:40.4), Sophia Hernandez in sixth (20:46.7) and Mackenna Miller in seventh (20:54.7) to round out the team total. Celeste Ramos (15th) and Violet Panton (19th) gave SF two displacers among the overall top 20 among 139 total runners in the field.

Brace crossed the finish line in 20:41.8, outdueling two Point Loma competitors for first place. Freshman Maclynn McCurdy followed in fifth (21:19.0) with Giuliana Allen just four places back from McCurdy with a 21:58.5. Two more frosh Troubies, Grace Zylstra and Andrea Silva, placed 26th (23:49.6) and 28th (24:01.2) overall for 58 team points. Unfortunately for St. Francis, South Pasadena's overall depth resulted in its top five runners finishing between seventh and 18th places for 57 points – one ahead of the Troubies.

The Clovis Invitational takes place on the same 5K course as the CIF State Championships, held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The meet continues with large-school programs on Saturday. St. Francis returns to action on October 18 in a rare fall meet held on a track: the Grizzly 3,200 at Granite Bay.
