Hollar, Thorall win individual races at Woodbridge Classic

IRVINE, Calif. – Freshman Holly Thorall and junior Mia Hollar won their respective races, while freshman Alyssa Gutierrez led St. Francis with a 19th-place time of 16 minutes, 37.4 seconds in the Bob Day Girls' Sweepstakes three-mile main event, highlighting St. Francis at the 44th Woodbridge Cross Country Classic at Orange County Great Park Saturday.

Additionally, the Troubadours captured the Gold frosh and Gold sophomore team competitions, scoring 28 points in each.

The Woodbridge Classic features 52 events spread across two days, culminating in the two Sweepstakes sections. The girls' race honors Day, the 1968 Olympian who founded the track & field and cross country programs at nearby Beckman High School. The marquee boys' race, the Doug Speck Sweepstakes, commemorates the co-founder of the famed Arcadia Invitational track & field meet.

St. Francis scored 468 points to finish 13th as a team in the Bob Day sweeps, with Gutierrez well ahead of her nearest Troubie teammates. Sophomores Halle Welch and Miya Menza crossed in 61st (17:11.2) and 116th (17:41.1), with junior Sunny Schranz not far behind Menza in 127th (17:48.4). Another freshman, Rebecca Dickson, posted the team's No. 5 scoring finish in 145th overall at 17:58.4. Sophomore Sophia Kadel and senior Chloe Harrison displaced in 191st (18:22.4) and 202nd (18:32.9).

With a winning time of 18:43.3, Thorall led a 1-2 St. Francis exacta atop the Gold frosh leaderboard, with Bianka Bagatelos following close behind in second at 18:50.2. The Troubies scored 28 total points, with Violet Panton placing 11th (20:19.1), Celeste Ramos taking 24th (21:01.9) and Giuliana Allen crossing in 26th (21:04.2). Andrea Silva and Grace Zylstra displaced in 77th and 94th, respectively, among 148 total finishers. JSerra followed SF with 58 points, with the top Lion (Valentina Vasquez) placing 12th behind Panton.

Two races later, the Troubadours enjoyed similar domination in the Gold sophomores event. With the minumum five entrants to even qualify for the team standings, they compiled 28 points – an identical total to their frosh sisters – to ouduel Hart's 61. While Palm Desert's Marina Avila outraced the field by more than 90 seconds, SF had three of the next four finishers: Emily Colonnello in second (18:50.5), Sophia Hernandez in third (19:16.5) and Emilia Ryan in fifth (19:29.0). Alyssa Tafoya followed in 12th (19:59.5) and Mackenna Miller came through in 24th (20:33.5).

Meanwhile, Hollar's winning time of 18:12.0 was one of just four St. Francis entrants in the Gold junior/senior race. Jordan Brace (41st), Lucy Loverich (133rd) and Ariana Lugo (162nd) represented the red and gold as additional individuals in the meet's 39th event.

Saturday's event with St. Francis representation was Event 26, the combined Blue/Gold novice. Sophomore Emmy Cheatham (34th), Robyn Peralta (53rd) and Eleanora Olmstead (57th) were the top Troubies in the massive 476-person field. SF finished 11th among the 41 qualifying teams.

Woodbridge also marks St. Francis' second meet in as many weekends with a final race held under the lights, following Stan State's Kim Duyst Invitational on September 13. The Troubies take a weekend off, then return to action on October 4 at Folsom's Bulldog Invitational at Willow Hill Reservoir.
