ROCKLIN, Calif. – Freshman Alyssa Gutierrez placed second in the varsity girls' 5-kilometer race with a time of 18 minutes, 17.3 seconds; then sophomore Emily Colonnello and freshman Bianka Bagatelos formed a 1-2 Troubadour exacta atop the junior varsity 3K leaderboard, as St. Francis returned to the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area for the Sierra Foothill League center cross country meet Wednesday.
The Troubie varsity placed third with 64 points, trailing only Whitney (34) and Davis (55) among the eight SFL teams. The jayvees had six finishers among the top nine overall en route to a winning 22-point total, well ahead of Davis (56) and Whitney (96).
Gutierrez formed a three-person lead group with eventual winner Sophie Hutchinson of Whitney and Avery Wolk of Davis. She ended up as the top frosh finisher in the varsity race by a wide margin: more than two full minutes faster than Davis' Layla Wolk. Sophomore Halle Welch took sixth overall at 19:09.9, with junior Sunny Schranz crossing in ninth with a 19:40.5. Sophomore Miya Menza finished 17th (20:01.9) while junior Mia Hollar took 31st (20:56.3) to complete the scoring finishers. Sophia Kadel and Jordan Brace represented the SF displacing finishers in 38th and 39th, respectively.
In the JV race, Colonnello entered the finish chute in 11:37.1, just ahead of Bagatelos at 11:38.5. Two Davis freshman placed third and fourth, then four Troubies crossed during a span of 20 seconds to wrap up the scoring. Holly Thorall came in fifth (12:12.7), Sophia Hernandez in sixth (12:18.0), Emilia Ryan in eighth (12:31.0) and Mackenna Miller in ninth (12:32.9). Violet Panton represented the seventh SF finisher and final displacer in 15th (13:04.4).
The center meet is the first of two SFL meets that combine to determine the final league champions. The SFL Championship, held at Jessup University on November 1, will be the second.
