VACAVILLE, Calif. – Freshman Alyssa Gutierrez and senior Jordan Brace won the frosh-soph and junior varsity races, respectively, while junior Sunny Schranz led a tight St. Francis front pack to victory in the varsity 3-mile race at the Lagoon Valley Classic cross country meet at Lagoon Valley Park Saturday.
The Troubadours prevailed in the five-team large-school varsity field with 33 points, just ahead of Sierra Foothill League rival Davis (44) and host Vacaville (55).
Although the host Bulldogs enjoyed the top two individuals, St. Francis won the varsity team competition thanks to four runners in succession. Schranz placed fourth in 18 minutes, 54.5 seconds. Miya Menza (19:16.0), Halle Welch (19:17.5) and Sophia Kadel (19:21.6) then followed in fifth, sixth and seventh places, respectively. Mia Hollar and Chloe Harrison battled for the final scoring place, with Hollar finishing in 11th overall at 20:14.9. Still, Harrison's 12th was good enough to displace one Blue Devil scorer while Emily Colonnello's displacing 16th place still outpaced the next three Vacaville runners.
Gutierrez won a sizable frosh-soph field of 161 finishers in the frosh-soph 2-mile run with a winning time of 12:13.2 seconds. That was nearly a full minute faster than the next competitor, teammate Rebecca Dickson (13:10.1). Bianka Bagatelos placed fifth, Holly Thorall took eighth (13:52.6) and Violet Panton crossed in 11th (14:39.15) to compile a winning team score of 27. Maclynn McCurdy and Celeste Ramos displaced in 12th and 19th, respectively, keeping the youngest Troubies 27 points ahead of Davis in the 14-team standings.
Finally, Brace bested 74 other runners to win the JV finale with a winning time of 12:58.9, more than 29 seconds faster than Sacred Heart Cathedral's Violet Daters. Lucy Loverich was the second Troubie to cross, placing sixth overall in 14:23.6. Rounding out the SF scorers were Ariana Lugo in 17th (15:36.2), Isabella Uribe in 38th (18:27.0) and Bianca Espanola in 46th (18:46.1). Maddy Cheatham (54th overall) and Cheyenne Swyers (62nd) had the two Troubie displacing finishes.
The Lagoon Valley Classic kicked off the season for the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Div. III champions. St. Francis cross returns to action in one week at the Soiree at SWRA Distance Festival in Rocklin.
