Troubies celebrate seniors during SFL home finale

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior shortstop Isabella Barge and freshman catcher Chloe Hoertsch each finished 3-for-4 at the plate, but St. Francis surrendered two big Trojan offensive rallies in the fourth and sixth innings to fall to Oak Ridge, 9-3, in Sierra Foothill League girls' fastpitch action at Schuster Field Friday.

The Troubadours slip to 11-14 for the season and 4-9 in league play with one SFL game left to play.

Friday's matchup also represented the regular-season home finale for St. Francis, which honored seven seniors before and throughout the game: Barge, Marissa Jensen, Jaeya Levitt, Reese Lewis, Alexis McFarland, Julia Nielsen and manager Lillian Desmond. The team held a ceremony prior to the first pitch, had announcements for different seniors between innings, and even a Sacramento Sheriff helicopter greeting overhead.

In the end, the Trojans enjoyed the on-field festivities. Emery Glaser launched a three-run home run as part of a four-run fourth, then delivered an RBI double in the sixth. Utah Tech-bound Gemma Almont followed with a grand slam two batters later to extend the ORHS lead to 9-1.

St. Francis got on the board in the fifth when McFarland walked with one out, advanced to second on a Hoertsch blooper, then later scored when pitcher Kaili Heeb knocked a similar hit to left. The Troubies added two more to their offensive tally in the sixth, with Barge and Jocelyn VIllaflor leading off the inning with back-to-back base knocks, and Nielsen walking to load the bases. Leavitt brought in a run on her RBI single, then McFarland followed with a bases-loaded pass. Pitcher Kennedi Freeland returned to the pitcher's circle to record three straight outs and end the threat.

The Troubadours close out the regular season with two road games in the upcoming week. On Monday, they travel to the Natomas area of Sacramento to make up the April 1 date at Inderkum. That contest starts at 4 p.m. Then SF closes out league play at Davis on Wednesday for a 4:30 first pitch.
