St. Francis held to two hits at Whitney

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior Reese Lewis singled in the second while senior Marissa Jensen reached on a hard bounder through the left side in the third as the lone St. Francis base hits in an 11-0 loss to Whitney in Sierra Foothill League softball action Friday evening.

The Troubadours drop their fifth straight to fall to 9-12 for the year and 3-7 in league play. The Wildcats, which top the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I power rankings on MaxPreps, improve to 16-8 and remain in a tie for first in the SFL standings at 8-2.

Lewis and Jensen represented half of the SF baserunners, as Alexis McFarland and Elizabeth Bettar each were hit by pitches. McFarland's presence on the basepaths actually helped Jensen pick up her base knock: she ran on the pitch, prompting Whitney shortstop Brooklyn Steele to cover the bag for the throw. Instead, Jensen poked a hard grounder to where Steele had been.

Despite two Troubies in scoring position, Wildcat sophomore Taylor Cordell got out of that third without any further damage, then senior Paige Tamblyn fired two perfect relief innings before the run rule took effect.

Meanwhile, Whitney pushed across three runs in the first, one in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth to complete its shutout. Rebecca Rau and Lulu Im each had two hits, with Im pounding out a triple in the third. The Wildcats had 12 hits total, and had additional help from four SF errors.

St. Francis returns to action on Saturday morning, hosting Christian Brothers for the return of the "Holy Diamond" rivalry of Sacramento's largest Catholic private schools. First pitch is 11 a.m. at Schuster Field.
