Troubie softball holds on at Folsom

FOLSOM, Calif. – Corner infielders Jocelyn Villaflor and Marissa Jensen smacked consecutive RBI hits in the third inning while sophomore right-hander Kaili Heeb surrendered just one earned run in a complete game win, as St. Francis held on for a 3-2 victory over Folsom in Sierra Foothill League girls' fastpitch action Wednesday.

The Troubadours improve to 4-5 for the year and even their league mark to 1-1. The Bulldogs drop their fourth straight game to slip to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in SFL play.

Heeb allowed eight hits with no walks in her 7.0 innings in the circle, with both Folsom runs coming in the second frame on the strength of three doubles and an SF error. The Troubies had already benefited from extra outs in their first, taking an initial 1-0 lead thanks to Alexis McFarland and Villaflor each reaching on infield miscues. The Bulldog bats erased that lead in their second, resulting in a 2-1 lead.

Still, the Troubies answered in the next half-inning, with McFarland leading off on a chopper that bounced over Bulldog second baseman Xavia Hodgins. Brooklyn Jackson retired the next two SF batters, with McFarland stuck on first, before Villaflor went opposite field for a double to the track. This brought in McFarland for the equalizer while providing Jensen with Villaflor in scoring position.

Jensen then knocked a grounder that bounced just out of reach of Hodgins, allowing Villaflor to score standing up for the go-ahead.

Folsom had early hits in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but failed to push across any more runs. Right fielder Lillyana Perkins ran down a couple of well-struck liners in the sixth, with Heeb recording her only strikeout to aid in a 1-2-3 frame. Isabella Barge and Ariella Alcantar initiated a double play in the seventh to help seal the win on defense.

Alcantar and pinch hitter Hazel Pryor had the remaining of St. Francis' five hits, rapping out back-to-back singles in the sixth.

St. Francis returns to action on Friday for another SFL road game, this time at Granite Bay. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
