Thunder strikes Troubies in SFL softball opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore right-hander Kaili Heeb allowed just five hits with no walks and no earned runs in seven innings complete, but St. Francis also managed just four hits of its own in a 2-0 loss to Rocklin in the Sierra Foothill League softball season opener Friday afternoon.

The Troubadours dip to 2-4 for the year, and open league play at 0-1. The Thunder improves to 5-1 overall, with its third shutout of the year.

Junior Ariella Alcantar rapped out singles in the second and fourth innings to lead St. Francis at the plate, with seniors Reese Lewis and Alexis McFarland each finishing 1-for-3. The Troubies posed their biggest threat in the fourth, with Lewis and Alcantar knocking consecutive base hits, and Hazel Pryor following with a walk to load the bases. However, Rocklin junior Payton Prior fanned back-to-back SF batters toward her eight total strikeouts to escape.

Rocklin scored both of its runs in the following frame. Second baseman Amanda Wetteland reached on a two-base error to lead off, then scored two pitchers later on a Carissa Wilson single. Alcantar completed a double play to clear the bases, but Thunder outfielder Cat Alston followed with a deep fly to center that McFarland nearly chased down at the warning track. Alston came around on another Troubie error and Renee Dragseth doubled to left to give Rocklin two in scoring position. Heeb thwarted any further damage with her lone punchout of the game.

St. Francis put two runners on in each of the fifth and sixth, but failed to cut into the deficit.

The Troubies return to action for a rare Saturday morning game at Laguna Creek. First pitch is 10 a.m.
