JV water polo closes 2024 season at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Abigail Benavidez tallied the lone Troubadour goal as St. Francis fell to Davis, 14-1, in the girls' varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League water polo quadrupleheader at Arroyo Park Monday night.

The Troubies finish their regular season with a 16-9 overall record and 7-5 mark in the SFL.

Benavidez' goal completed a power play with 4:09 remaining in the third quarter. Davis' Aiva Mann was charged with an offensive foul and exclusion, giving SF a 6-on-5 counterattack. Senior Miranda Ferguson assisted Benavidez for the shot, ending a spell of 13 straight missed shots for the Troubies.

Meanwhile, Davis scored five unanswered in the first quarter and led by a 7-0 margin at the halftime break, with Jessie Walker scoring one of her seven total goals early in the third frame to make it 8-0 before Benavidez ended the scoring drought.

The Blue Devils answered with a long bomb from Ireland Greenway on their next possession to ignate a 7-0 finish. The fourth quarter included a 6-on-4 goal from Walker and a 5-on-4 conversion from Mila Kimball.

Prior to the varsity tilt, St. Francis junior varsity lost by a 19-4 final to its Davis counterparts. Kendal Douglas scored from four meters out with 3:17 left in the first quarter, then converted a Della Smith assist off a Blue Devil contra foul at the 4:12 mark in the third to lead the Troubies in scoring.

Bonnie Cohen and Savannah Hamilton each added a goal in the fourth for the jayvees. Cohen's score came on a rebound and putback of a Hamilton shot that drifted just left of the cage with 3:18 to go, then Smith notched her second assist to Hamilton with 2:32 left.

Unfortunately for the younger Troubies, Davis dominated from the opening sprint, with freshman Coco Waterson scoring nine goals and sophomore Mia Leyson adding six more.

Monday's contest closes out the season for JV (3-20), while varsity will await its seeding in the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament. The brackets will be announced at cifsjs.org on Friday afternoon.
