JV water polo opens play at Granite Bay's Jamboree

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Sophomore Della Smith scored two goals to lead her team against Monte Vista, but St. Francis finished with two losses on the first day of action at Granite Bay's JV Jamboree girls' water polo tournament Friday.

The Troubadours lost to the Mustangs in their opener, 14-4, then fell to a 16-0 shutout against St. Mary's in the nightcap. The JV Jamboree consists of four pools and 14 schools, with SF assigned to one of the two three-team pools.

Ava Jack and Molly Suggs each had a goal in the MV game, with Gabriella Philip notching an assist. St. Francis trailed 9-0 at the half, then scored three of its four goals in the fourth quarter. Philip had two 6-on-5 chances for a Troubie goal against the Rams, but credit the goalie for coming up with the stop on both shots.

Kendal Douglas also gave St. Francis a chance to score with roughly three minutes left in the fourth versus St. Mary's. She drew an exclusion on a counterattack, but the Rams retreated to their defense before the Troubies could set up a power play. St. Mary's ended up stealing the ball back, ending the last SF threat to score.

Freshman Sasha Michon played all eight quarters at goalkeeper, tallying 11 saves and a steal for the day. She made one of the more painful but also spectacular stops in the final minute of the St. Mary's after a double exclusion. The Ram player opted for a back-handed sweep shot, which caught the surprised Michon in the head.

The Troubadours conclude the JV Jamboree with games against Oakmont (9:35 a.m.) and McClatchy (12:10 p.m.) on Saturday. All games take place at Granite Bay High School, with the main pool split into north-south courses.
