Wenceslao makes SF debut with four goals against Davis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Abigail Benavidez netted two goals while senior Miranda Ferguson and freshman Emma Dietrich each scored once, as St. Francis lost to Davis by a 20-4 final in the girls' varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League quadrupleheader at Jesuit High Wednesday night.

The Troubadours slip to 9-5 for the season, and dip to 4-2 in SFL play. The Blue Devils improve to 7-5 overall and 5-1 in league. The two teams entered the matchup in a tie for second place in the SFL race, trailing only undefeated Granite Bay.

SF scored one goal in each quarter of the contest. Benavidez put the Troubies on the board with two minutes left in the first quarter, scoring bar-in a long free throw to cut Davis' lead to 3-1. She then hit her second goal on a penalty shot midway through the second, thanks to Ferguson's two-meter play. Ferguson later notched a goal of her own on a Piper Brostrom assist with 2:05 left in the third, adjusting the scoreboard to 13-3. Dietrich then lobbed in a goal from the four spot with 4:37 left.

Davis freshman Megan Tapio led all scorers with six goals, including five after the halftime break. Davis outscored its host by a 10-2 margin in each half.

St. Francis' junior varsity also faced a dominant Blue Devils squad in a 27-4 loss during Wednesday's nightcap. Sophomore Maya Wenceslao scored all four Troubadour goals to go with a team-best three steals in her Troubie debut. A transfer from Inderkum who led the Tigers' JV with 47 goals last year, Wenceslao primarily serves as the SF varsity manager.

The two St. Francis water polo squads return to action on Monday for a home SFL date with Rocklin. First sprints are 4 p.m. for JV, 5 p.m. for varsity. The Troubies-Thunder game leads into late addition to the schedule, the much-awaited "Holy Water" doubleheader with Christian Brothers on October 10. The SF-CB rivalry games take place at American River College at 5 p.m. (varsity) and 6 p.m. (JV).
