DAVIS, Calif. – Freshman Celeste Ramos won the junior varsity girls' 1,600 meters before adding a third place in the 800, while fellow ninth grader Alyssa Gutierrez punched her tickets to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I meet in the 3,200 and as part of the 4x800 relay, highlighting St. Francis on the first day of the Sierra Foothill League track & field championships, held at Davis' Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Wednesday.
The league meet holds a decidedly unusual format in 2026. Wednesday's session consisted almost solely of JV events, with the exception of the 4x800 relay and 3,200 meters. Then on Saturday, the meet moves to Jesuit, where it consists exclusively of varsity championships.
All six of the girls' 4x800 relays will advance from the SFL to the SJS. Whitney won the race in nine minutes, 56.22 seconds, with the foursome of Gutierrez, Mia Hollar, Miya Menza and Bianka Bagatelos compiling a third-place 10:12.17. Then in Wednesday's final event, Gutierrez dominated the field with a winning 10:29.38 in the 3,200 – more than 20 seconds faster than runner-up Eva Soto and her 10:51.16.
In all, six Troubadours earned section divisional berths in that 3,200. Besides Gutierrez atop the podium, sophomore Miya Menza placed eighth at 11:03.90. Furthermore, Rebecca Dickson (11:12.68), Sophia Kadel (11:14.28), Emily Colonnello (11:15.90) and Chloe Harrison (11:17.34) surpassed the at-large qualifying time to the section meet, crossing the finish line in succession from 11th through 14th place.
Among the JV events, Ramos and sophomore Mackenna Miller amassed the most team points toward St. Francis' fifth-place total of 37. Ramos outdueled Davis' Natalie Mittlemen at the line, 5:32.96 to 5:33.08, with Miller following in third with a personal best of 5:35.01. Ramos added a bronze of her own in the 800 with a time of 2:31.83. Miller later added a runner-up finish in the JV 3,200, barely missing her second career sub-12 mark with a 12:00.01 on the clock.
Sophomore Emilia Ryan followed Ramos in fourth place in the 800 (2:38.50), picking up another four team points. Sophia Hernandez chipped in another two tallies with her fifth in the 3,200 (12:55.53).
The top 10 finishers in all varsity events, plus any other competitor hitting the at-large standard, advance from the SFL Championships to the CIF-SJS Divisional at Folsom on May 9. The session at Prairie City Stadium then will feed into an all-division meet at Sacramento City College on May 16, then the top performers at Hughes Stadium will return to Folsom High on May 23 for the SJS Masters meet.
Saturday's SFL varsity championships start at 9 a.m.
