SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Alyssa Gutierrez and sophomore Halle Welch each shattered stadium records in their respective races while junior Alexa Randall ran the fastest 200-meter dash by a Troubadour in more than 15 years, as St. Francis won nine events at the Inderkum Invitational high school track & field meet Saturday.
Gutierrez won the 1,600 with a time of five minutes, 04.27, easily surpassing the old venue record of 5:19.84, set by Pioneer's Erin Sanders at the 2009 Tri-County Conference championship meet. Sophomore Miya Menza also cracked the old benchmark with her second-place time of 5:17.40. Later in the day, Welch led a 1-2-3-4 St. Francis superfecta with a time of 11:21.68, more than 20 seconds faster than Inderkum's Maeve Mahony, who went 11:42.32 at a Capital Valley Conference center meet in March of 2022.
Gutierrez's 3,200 time ranks No. 2 by a St. Francis freshman, behind only Cate Joaquin's 4:58.62 at the 2019 Stanford Invitational.
Perhaps most impressive, however, was the 24.99 Randall clocked in the first heat of the 200. She became just the second Troubie to break the 25-second barrier, behind only Cekarri Nixon, who set the wind-legal school record of 24.34 at the 2010 Sac-Joaquin Section Masters. Randall, whose previous PR was a 25.32 at last year's SJS Division I meet, jumps ahead of Ugo Eke for No. 2 on the school leaderboard.
Nixon and Eke both continued their track & field careers at nearby UC Davis, with Eke later competing for the Sierra Leone national team.
Randall also picked up a win in the 400 meters with a 58.24, not far from her PR of 57.49. Oddly, she did not win the event in the 200, as Vanden's Naiaja Sizemore claimed that race with a 24.55. Sizemore is a nationally ranked performer who committed to Ohio State in November. Randall's 400 came on the heels of anchoring St. Francis' 4x100 relay to a winning time of 52.00. The Troubies were in third place behind Monterey Trail and Franklin until the handoff to Randall, who overtook both opponents for the win. St. Francis ended up finishing just .04 ahead of the Mustangs and .05 in front of the Wildcats.
Other Troubie varsity wins went to sophomore Sophia Kadel in the 800 meters (2:23.84) and junior Jasleen Gandhoke, who tied Sheldon's Margot Zemke in the high jump (5-feet-2). Gandhoke enjoyed an impressive overall day, finishing second behind Randall in the 400 at 59.86 and sixth in the 200 at 26.63. The 2025 state qualifier in the high jump is just the 14th athlete in program history to cover the quarter in less than a minute.
St. Francis added frosh-soph wins with sophomore Emilia Ryan kicking off the day with a 5:53.33 in the 1,600, freshman Bianka Bagatelos dominating the 800 at 2:24.75, and freshman Holly Thorall leading a 1-through-4 sweep in the 3,200 with her 11:51.43 effort.
The Troubadours return to action on February 28 for Cordova's Clarke Massey Relays.
