RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The St. Francis foursome of Gaby Gonzalez, Alexa Randall, Emma Bugarin and Jasleen Gandhoke compiled a time of one minute, 45.85 seconds in the 4x200 relay, breaking the previous school record by almost exactly three full seconds, as one of several Troubadour highlights at the Clarke Massey Relays high school track & field meet at Cordova's Lancer Stadium Saturday.
The 4x200 mark surpassed the previous SF benchmark of 1:48.84, set by Ingrid Kantola, Micheli Arcuri, Tifani Grimes and Yuora Yelpaala at the 2004 edition of the CMR. It also eclipsed the old stadium record of 1:46.0, a Chavez High effort timed by hand in 2008, although Christian Brothers compiled a 1:43.49 to take over that venue standard.
In all, St. Francis won seven events, including all six distance races and relay. Freshman Alyssa Gutierrez and sophomore Sophia Hernandez captured the varsity and JV versions of the 3,200 meters, respectively. Gutierrez' time of 10:42.67 moved her into No. 2 in the Lancer Stadium all-time list. That places her among a top five of future NCAA Division I athletes: Eleanor Raker (Air Force), Laurynne Chetalat (Cal), Natalie Wieland (UC Davis) and Maria Malone (Stanford).
The Troubies later won both 4x800 relays. Mackenna Miller, Emilia Ryan, Emily Colonnello and Holly Thorall combined for a 10:24.37 to win the JV race by more than 22 seconds; while the varsity crew of Halle Welch, Bianka Bagatelos, Sophia Kadel and Miya Menza went 9:39.69 to edge Christian Brothers and post the No. 6 time in school history. That also becomes the fastest high school 4x800 in stadium history, and second overall behind the Los Gatos Run Club's 2021 mark of 9:39.40.
Both distance medley relays also went to St. Francis, with the varsity group of Welch, Kadel, Menza and Gutierrez compiling a 12:25.37, also good for sixth in school history and tops in venue history. Bella Vista held the old Lancer Stadium best of 12:43.57, set at the 2016 Clarke Massey Relays. Colonnello, Alyssa Tafoya, Miller and Thorall won the JV DMR at 13:31.28.
Gandhoke claimed St. Francis' lone win in a field event, clearing 5-foot-2 in the high jump. Impressively, she finished her high jump moments before anchoring that record-setting 4x200 relay. Also among the field events, the trio of Christie So (88-10.5), Antonija Jezildzic (87-8.5) and Carley Glenn (65-7) combined for 242 feet, 2 inches, good for fifth in the school record book for the discus relay. Furthermore, sophomores Cassidy Butler (7-6) and Olivia Santos (7-0) hit respective personal bests in the pole vault, good for second and third places, respectively.
The Clarke Massey Relays, formerly the Pony Express Relays, were renamed for the legendary Cordova coach whose Lancer track & field and cross country teams won a combined 19 league titles, four Sac-Joaquin Section banners and the 1973 state cross country championship.
St. Francis track & field has a short turnaround before competing in the first of three Sierra Foothill League triple dual meets of the year on Thursday. Hosted at Jesuit, the meet features visitors Davis, Oak Ridge and Folsom. The first events start at 1:30 p.m.
