Troubie hoop falls in playoff opener at Colfax

COLFAX, Calif. – Senior Lexi London scored 15 points in her high school career finale while freshman Elise Vipond added 13 in her postseason debut, but St. Francis fell off the pace against Colfax in a 74-50 loss in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section girls' basketball Division II tournament Tuesday night.

The Troubadours finish at 10-17 for the year. The Falcons improve to 22-7 and will face the winner of Tuesday's Del Oro-Ponderosa matchup on Thursday.

Freshman Hassanah Ramsey-Gilbert chipped in another eight points, with junior Audrey Bashore knocking down a corner three en route to her seven tallies. Junior Natalia Zitelli scored her lone bucket on a Colleen Medina assist to start the fourth period. Medina (3-for-4) and Natalie Dimen (2-for-2) combined for five more points from the line.

All of Vipond's scoring came in the first half and almost exclusively from beyond the three-pointer arc: she drained three treys while making 2 of 3 from the line on a three-point foul near the end of the first half.

St. Francis fell into an early 16-2 hole, with a London trip to the stripe accounting for its only scoring. Vipond banked a three-pointer with 3:45 left for the first Troubie field goal, then scored at the 2:47 and 1:46 marks to help pull a little closer to a 20-10 deficit. However, senior Madalyn Sigrist pocketed an uncontested three and added a fast-break score down the stretch to lift the Falcons to a 25-11 edge through the first eight minutes.

The Troubies managed to pile up 22 points in the second frame to close the gap to 42-33 at the halftime break. Bashore had six in the quarter, thanks to her corner three to start followed by a drive plus the and-one bonus throw at 3:21. London managed seven of her own, with a pair of three pointers plus a drive through the lane. Her trey at 2:44 brought the margin to single digits at 40-31. Then after Colfax sophomore Lucie Greco made both ends of a trip to the line, Vipond drew a three-shot foul behind the left elbow with 1:10 before halftime. She made 2 of 3, again bringing the deficit to nine going into the break.

Unfortunately for St. Francis, Colfax exploded out of the break for a 13-2 overall run, with a Ramsey-Gilbert drive at 6:42 preventing a scoreless stretch. Senior Jules Massick converted a Greco assist at 1:44 to give the Falcons their first 20-point lead of the game. Medina and London combined for three more free throws in the third, but SF went to the final stanza down by a 21-point, 59-38 margin.

The Medina-to-Zitelli transition early in the fourth marked the only time St. Francis reduced the gap to less than 20 for the remainder of the game. Ramsey-Gilbert added two more points in the paint down that final stretch, with London scoring her final two field goals as a Troubie at the 3:50 and 2:20 marks.

London, who has committed to continue her basketball career at Occidental, finished her senior year with 455 points and brought her career total to 1,066. She finishes fourth and third in the school's MaxPreps-era record book in those respective categories, while her 148 career three-pointers also puts her fourth.

Tuesday's game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. on the school's Ron Pucci Pavilion court. However, to avoid possible hazards with the winter storm, the contest moved up two hours to a 5 p.m. tip-off. To complicate matters further, a leak in the roof forced the game across campus to the old 'B' gym. Department staff and parents converted a large OLED screen into a makeshift shot clock, with Falcon players and fans carting the bench seats through the rain from Pucci to the old gym. In the end, the contest got underway with a 5:20 p.m. tip.
