Troubies finish second at SJS subsections

Troubies finish second at SJS subsections

ANGELS CAMP, Calif. – Freshman Miya Menza, freshman Halley Welch and sophomore Sunny Schranz crossed the finish line with 1.1 seconds of each other to give St. Francis three scorers among the top 16 and amass a second-place team score of 112 points in the Division III varsity girls' race at the Sac-Joaquin Subsection cross country meet, held at Frogtown on the Calaveras County Fairgrounds Saturday.

Additionally, the Troubadours won both their junior varsity and frosh-soph events, with the younger SF squad coming one point away from the perfect score of 15.

The Troubadour varsity seven finished behind only Oakdale's winning 94 points, and four ticks ahead of third-place Del Oro (116) among the 18-team field.

Menza placed 13th with a time of 20 minutes 15.3 seconds, with Welch in 16th (20:15.6) and Schranz in 17th (20:16.9). Sophia Kadel finished 22nd at 20:48.4 to help SF fend off the Golden Eagles in the team standings. Mykaela Le took 55th (22:58.3), Lucie Pickering Pick 57th (22:58.4) and Kyra Lueras 58th (23:03.4) to round out the SF scorers and displacers.

Del Oro actually had the best finisher out of the SFL D-III girls, with Claire Lesiw placing sixth overall. However, the Troubies' overall strength at the top of the lineup made the difference, as the next three Golden Eagles went 24th, 29th and 30th.

St. Francis followed with a dominating win in the combined Divisions III-V junior varsity race, with Jordan Brace finishing fifth overall and tops among scorers with a 21:29.2 time. Chloe Harrison followed in sixth (21:54.2), with Ashley Sexauer (22:24.6), Zoe Smith (22:30.0) and Ashlyn Smith (22:34.2) coming through in order, ninth through 11th. MacKenzie Olmstead (24th) and Olivia Charles (53rd). Note: JV scores were corrected subsequent to this release. The changes are reflected in the agate below.

Finally, the Troubie frosh-soph scored a near-perfect 16 points, with Emilia Ryan, Mia Hollar, Emily Colonnello and Sophia Hernandez finishing in a 1-2-3-4 superfecta among the 77 finishers. Additionally, freshman Lydia Stralen and sophomore Morgane Bertran crossed in seventh and eighth, respectively, with freshman Lily Fowler following in 10th. That trio counted for the final six points and displaced seventh and eighth, pushing DO into a distance second with 55 points.

St. Francis moves on to the overall CIF-SJS championships, held in Folsom on November 16. The Troubies are the defending champions at that level, having captured the program's 14th overall section banner almost exactly one year ago.
