Troubies preview state championship course at Clovis Invite

FRESNO, Calif. – Emilia Ryan won her division's frosh-soph 5-kilometer race with a time of 20 minutes, 36.9 seconds, while Jordan Brace and Sunny Schranz led the Troubadours in the junior varsity and varsity events, respectively, as St. Francis competed at the ASICS Clovis Invitational high school cross country meet at Woodward Park Friday.

The legendary meet takes place on the same course as the CIF state championships, held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Troubadours entered this year's meet as a "small school," putting all of their races on Friday rather than Saturday.

Friday's frosh-soph girls combined small and medium schools, but then divided into Blue and Yellow subdivisions. St. Francis varsity's field only came from small schools from the Blue subdivision. Meanwhile, junior varsity combined small and medium schools from both color designations.

Ryan led three SF finishers in the top eight en route to a team victory in the Blue frosh-soph, small/medium girls' 5K. Lydia Stralen and Emily Colonnello respectively placed sixth (21:17.4) and eighth (21:20.9). Lily Fowler and Morgane Bertran rounded out the scorers in 14th (21:40.4) and 17th (21:53.6), with Skye Smith and Rey Becerril coming through the chute within two seconds of each other as displacing finishers.

Schranz and freshman Sophia Kadel placed 31st (19:34.7) and 32nd (19:35.6) among the 166 finishers in the Blue small school varsity girls' event, helping St. Francis place fifth of 23 teams. Miya Menza followed in 40th at 19:49.1, with Halle Welch not far behind in 48th (19:58.8). Sophia Hernandez rounded out the varsity scorers in 87th (21:06.3), with Mia Hollar and Chloe Harrison displacing in 94th (21:21.0) and 100th (21:28.2), respectively.

The jayvees were the last of the Troubies on the course on Friday, with SF finishing second of the three teams: well behind San Luis Obispo's 18 points but easily ahead of Shafter's 79. Brace crossed the line in 21:34.2, with Ashley Sexauer four places back in seventh (22:50.4). Emmelyn Cheatham (24:36.2), MacKenzie Olmstead (25:21.1) and Robyn Peralta (26:37.3) completed the scoring finishes in 16th, 21st and 26th. Abi Wallace came through one spot behind Peralta at 26:37.4, then Olivia Charles took 33rd (27:49.3) as the two displacing finishers.

This marks the 45th running of the Clovis Invitational. The large and extra-large schools plus the signature Bill Buettner Championship Girls and Rob Brenner Championship Boys races compete on Saturday.

The Troubadours wrap up their regular season at the Grizzly 3,200 at Granite Bay on October 19.
