GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Freshman Halle Welch placed seventh in her heat and eighth overall with a time of 11 minutes, 27.61 seconds while fellow ninth grader Miya Menza finished one place and less than three seconds behind her, leading St. Francis at the Granite Bay's Grizzly 3,200 distance running meet.
Similar in format to the HOKA ONE ONE Postal Nationals, the Grizzly 3,200 effectively stands as a track meet during the cross country, only with one event for each of the boys and girls: the 3,200-meter run. The athletes are seeded into numerous sections, with all races then combined into one overall set of results. However, the top three finishers in each heat received awards for their efforts, regardless of time.
Menza finished in 11:30.39, with Sunny Schranz in 15th at 11:39.04. Sophia Kadel crossed the line in 11:34.11 of the second heat, good for 12th place overall. Senior Mykaela Le was the only other Troubie to pick up some hardware, thanks to her third-place 12:27.88 in the third section. She led three straight SF finishers in that race, along with Mia Hollar (12:29.04) and Emily Colonnello (12:34.88).
Although no team scores were compiled, the St. Francis scoring finishers would have been Welch (8th), Menza (9th), Kadel (12th, Schranz (15th) and Emiliia Ryan (31st), with Le and Hollar displacing in 35th and 36th overall.
Additionally, the times posted by Welch and Menza would rank among the Troubies' top 10 by frosh runners. Welch's 11:27.61 and Menza's 11:30.39 are slightly faster than Miranda Myers' No. 5 entry of 11:31.16 from the 2012 Bronco Roundup. In fact, the fifth- through ninth-ranked performers on SF's frosh top 10 in the 3,200 later become collegiate runners: Myers (Northern Arizona), Lauren LaRocco (Portland), Peyton Bilo (Cal Poly) and Paige Quigley (Seton Hall). Schranz sits fourth on that same list, thanks to her 11:25.38 at the Sacramento MOC last spring.
St. Francis takes a week off from competition before its first appearance in the Sierra Foothill League championships, held at Jessup on November 2. The Troubies had won the last six Delta League championships before the Sac-Joaquin Section realigned the conference affiliations throughout the area.
