Frosh-soph first, varsity fifth at first SFL meet

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Freshmen Sophia Hernandez and Emilia Ryan finished 2-3 in the frosh-soph 3-kilometer race while sophomore Sunny Schranz placed eighth overall in the varsity 5K, leading St. Francis individually at the Sierra Foothill League cross country center meet at the Sunset Whitney Recreation Area Wednesday.

The Troubadours' frosh-soph easily won its team competition with 31 points, well ahead of Whitney (78). SF varsity placed fifth with 111 points, just five shy of Granite Bay, but well behind winning Oak Ridge (46), second-place Whitney (63) and third-place Davis (72).

Schranz entered the finish chute in 19 minutes, 33.0 seconds as the lone Troubie in the top 10. Freshman Sophia Kadel came through in 19th at 20:14.4, with Miya Menza and Halle Welch following in 27th (20:33.8) and 30th (20:52.6), respectively. The senior trio of Lucie Pickering Pick (35th), Mykaela Le (36th) and Kyra Lueras (38th) representing the SF No. 5 scorers and displacers, with junior Jordan Brace closely trailing in 40th.

Oak Ridge won the varsity girls' competition, thanks to eight Trojans in the top 17 – i.e. even the displacing finishers crossed the line ahead of the No. 2 scorers from St. Francis, Granite Bay, Del Oro and Rocklin.
In the frosh-soph opener, Hernandez finished in 12:02.0, less than a second behind Granite Bay's Abigail Osman (12:01.6). Ryan followed seconds back at 12:04.2, with Emily Colonnello in seventh (12:20.3), Lily Fowler in ninth (12:42.2) and Lydia Stralen in 10th (12:52.6). Sophomore Rey Becerril (23rd) and Alyssa Tafoya (31st) snared the displacing finishes for the Troubies.

In all, St. Francis frosh-soph had its entire top five across the finish line before Whitney's No. 2 runner or any of Davis' lineup. Granite Bay also had Anna Mills in sixth but the No. 4 and No. 5 Grizzlies crossed after the two Troubie displacers. Overall, Whitney took second with 78 points, Granite Bay in third (86), with Davis (90) and Del Oro (92) in a battle for fourth.

Wednesday's meet represents the lone mid-week competition for SF cross country, and serves as a preview for the SFL championship in early November. It also marked the second time in as many weeks that the SWRA hosted a cross country event, following the Soiree at SWRA festival on September 7. The Troubadours return to action on Saturday for the ever-popular Woodbridge XC Classic at Orange County Great Park on Saturday.
