Bates, Solander lead Troubies at SFL championships

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Sophomore Piper Bates amassed 362.80 points to finish second among the varsity competitors, while freshman Audrey Solander won the girls' junior varsity competition with a 211.30 total, as St. Francis wrapped action at the Sierra Foothill League diving championships Thursday.

The meet actually began on Tuesday but was halted to Thursday due to severe weather on its originally scheduled day.
Sophomore Stella Cassidy finished third overall in the varsity field, well ahead of fourth-place Violet Watts of Davis (299.90). Oak Ridge's Mimi Poort dominated the competition with a 428.95. Meanwhile, freshman Sadie Favreau was the only other diver in the JV group, tallying 156.75.

Bates posted her two best dives before the thunder and lightning struck on Tuesday. Her 6.5-6.0-5.5-6.5-6.0 awards on her 403C, or inward 1.5 somersaults, tuck position, picked up 40.70 points in the second round. Bates followed that with a 37.40 on a 103B (forward 1.5, pike) on her third dive. Cassidy piled up 36-point dives on each day, scooping 36.80 in the rainy second round on a 104B (forward 2.0, pike) on Tuesday, then 36.30 points on a 403C (inward 1.5, tuck) in the seventh round during Thursday's sunny session.

Bates and Cassidy amass 33 total points toward the Troubadour team score in the overall swimming & diving championships at Granite Bay later in the week.

Among the jayvees, Solander notched 20 or more points on six of her 11 dives, topping out with 27.20 from her 402C (inward 1.0, tuck) in the fourth round. Favreau enjoyed her two best dives in the rain on Tuesday, hauling 21.0 and 20.0 points on back-to-back inwards in the third and fourth rounds, respectively.

St. Francis next competes at the Sac-Joaquin Section championships, held at St. Mary's on May 4. The top four competitors from the section meet will move on to the state dive competition on May 14.
