Bates dominates field in SFL diving opener

FOLSOM, Calif. – Sophomore Piper Bates posted a winning score of 209.55, well ahead of runner-up teammate Stella Cassidy and her 161.70, leading St. Francis on the 1-meter board in the diving portion of a Sierra Foothill League double dual with Folsom and Whitney, held at Vista Del Lago High School.

Bates scored at least 30 points on each of her six dives, including a 44.0 in the fourth round on a 403C, or inward 1.5 tuck. This is the first time she has broken the 200-point barrier in a dual format, surpassing her previous best of 193.80 from last year's Granite Bay/Oak Ridge league meet. Cassidy finished strong with a 38.5 on her 5132D, or forward 1.5 with a twist; followed by a 36.80 bump on a 104B (forward 2.0 pike).

The competition, which also included divers from Christian Brothers and host Vista, contributes to Tuesday's SFL swimming dual meet with the Bulldogs and Wildcats. The Troubadours claimed first, second and fourth place in the matchup against Whitney for a 12-4 team score; while their 1-2-3-5 finish head-to-head against Folsom accounts for a 14-2 scoring push.

Two SF freshmen, Audrey Solander and Sadie Favreau, respectively amassed totals of 124.20 and 89.0 to round out their team's lineup for the day. Whitney's Liyana Burdette placed sixth overall with a 128.35 while only Folsom's Allannah Ryan's 111.05 prevented a 1-2-3-4 Troubie superfecta in that matchup.

Overall scoring from the combined swimming and diving meet is still not available as of Thursday night, as results from three events have still not been compiled more than 48 hours later.

St. Francis diving returns to action on Wednesday for the 1-meter portion of the SFL dual with Davis. The swim events run on Tuesday, with diving a day later, both held at the Blue Devils' new on-campus pool.
