St. Francis sweeps 'Cats in road LAX doubleheader

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior Jade Abalateo netted five goals, senior Keira Miles added another four, while sophomore Skye Smith dished out a career-best six assists, as St. Francis rolled past Whitney, 16-1, in the varsity nightcap of a Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse doubleheader Tuesday night.

The Troubadours pick up their fourth straight win to improve to 9-3 for the year, 8-3 in league play. The Wildcats continue to chase their first win of the year, dipping to 0-12 overall with an 0-11 in SFL games.

Abalateo completed her hat trick within a span of three and a half minutes during the first quarter, then had St. Francis' last tally in each of the second and third frames to finish with five scores. Miles netted a goal in each of the first two quarters, then converted assists from Delaney McGahan and Smith in quick succession late in the fourth.

Smith recorded most of her assists from the X, surpassing her previous high of five from the 2026 opener at West Park, and eclipsing her entire freshman total of five. She set up Abalateo twice and Lizzie David once in the Troubies' 6-1 first period, scored an eight-meter goal of her own at 7:26 in the second then dropped another dime for Abalateo with 2:37 left in the half. This set the board at 11-1, invoking the running clock.

Smith tacked on her fifth and sixth assists down the stretch of the fourth, first to Miles at 4:16 then another to David on a crease roll with 3:04 remaining in the contest.

Freshman Gillian Hamm contributed a hat trick of her own, thanks in part to back-to-back scores in the second. Freshman Bridget Beard accounted for the remaining goal, finishing from the eight-meter arc with less than four minutes left in the third.

St. Francis won 13 of the 21 total draws, with Miles leading the way with three. Smith, David, Hamm and Beard each won two. Hamm and McGahan paced the Troubies with two ground balls, while defender Cali Chambers had two of her team's five caused turnovers.

Oddly, SF briefly trailed in the contest: sophomore Coco Starrh put the Wildcats on the board in the third minute of play. Then Abalateo's three goals and Smith's three assists quickly flipped that deficit into a 6-1 Troubie edge.

Varsity's drubbing followed a 6-3 win for St. Francis' junior varsity. Sophomore Maura McManus led the Troubies on both sides of the ball, scoring two goals on the attacking end while amassing team bests of five GBs and three CTs on defense and in the midfield. Molly Smallenberger, Elena Petrakis, Bonnie Cohen and Hope Sperber also chipped in a goal apiece, with Petrakis earning three DCs and two steals.

Similar to their older varsity sisters, the Troubie jayvees trailed early by a 2-1 margin in the first quarter before taking a 4-2 halftime lead and a 5-2 edge through three.

Both teams return to Mather Sports Complex for their regular-season home finales against Del Oro. JV starts at 5:30 p.m., with varsity's first draw scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
