Troubies keep rolling with 16-5 win over Wildcats

MATHER, Calif. – Senior midfielders Keira Miles and Jade Abalateo combined for 10 goals and 13 draw controls to lead St. Francis to a 16-5 victory over Whitney in Sierra Foothill League varsity girls' lacrosse action at Mather Sports Complex Monday night.

The Troubadours remain undefeated at 4-0 overall with a 3-0 league mark. The Wildcats dip to 0-4 for the year, 0-3 in SFL play.

Miles delivered a double hat trick of six goals, raising her season total to 23 and her career sum to 159. This puts her within five goals of overtaking former teammate Brynley Hodge, who has 165 career goals in her three seasons record at MaxPreps. (Note: the actual St. Francis career record remains unknown, as no stats are available for the 2013, 2020 and 2021 seasons. This means as many as nine games are missing for Hodge, and an entire year for Hailey Kusserow, who netted 134 in her other three seasons from 2012 to 2015.)

Abalateo added four goals and an assist to match her career best of five total points, while her six draw controls doubled her previous best.

Freshman Gillian Hamm and sophomore Skye Smith also contributed significantly on either side of the ball. Hamm shot 3-for-4 with an assist on the attacking end, while adding two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Smith contributed two goals and two assists, while matching Miles with three ground balls plus tying Hamm and Maliya Lemus with her two steals.

The Troubies never trailed in the contest although their offense was relatively slow to start. Miles converted an eight-meter opportunity in the second minute, but Whitney senior Emerson Barker answered with her drive at the 8:43 mark. Smith then hit her own eight-meter with 5:15 left to regain the lead for SF, then assisted Hamm with 1:45 to begin a 6-1 overall run that ran into the second quarter.

Freshman Bridget Beard scored from the arc and Hamm completed her hat trick just 13 seconds later to give the Troubies an 8-2 advantage at the 9:00 mark of the second. Whitney got two goals back soon after, with Mayah Acosta's eight-meter score reducing the margin to 8-4 with 7:16 before halftime. Then St. Francis netted three straight to take an 11-4 halftime lead, and three more unanswered in the third to extend its lead to 14-4.

The Troubies slowed down their offense in the fourth, but still tacked on two more scores to keep the running clock in effect. Abalateo assisted Miles at 3:51 to set the board to 15-5, then Hamm's interception at the X turned into an assist to Abalateo with 1:44 remaining. Freshman goalkeeper Britten Sires put the finishing touch on the win when she stopped a Sabrina Miller eight-meter try for the final shot of the game.

The varsity contest followed a 4-0 shutout and the season's first win for St. Francis junior varsity in the opener. Sophomore Hannah Chitiea recorded a hat trick with Millie Katzeff adding the fourth goal. Katzeff also scooped up five ground balls, one behind each of Maura McManus and Hope Sperber, who in turn finished with steals totals of two and three, respectively.

Monday's game was originally slated for Thursday but moved up three days to accommodate other scheduling issues. Both Troubie squads return to action on Tuesday for a road doubleheader at Granite Bay. Game times are 5:30 (JV) and 7:15 p.m. (varsity).
