Grizzlies edge Troubies in SFL lacrosse showdown

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Senior midfielders Keira Miles and Jade Abalateo each scored four goals while freshman Gillian Hamm added a hat trick with two assists, but St. Francis went scoreless in the first quarter and won only 9 of 29 total draws in falling to Granite Bay, 13-12, in the varsity nightcap of a Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse doubleheader Tuesday night.

The Troubadours suffer their first loss to slip to 4-1 on the year, 3-1 in league play. The Grizzlies improve to 3-2 for the year with a 1-2 SFL record.

Sophomore Skye Smith accounted for the remaining SF goal while adding two assists and matching Abalateo with three draw controls. Hamm tied fellow ninth grader Cali Chambers with two caused turnovers, with Chambers picking up a team-best three ground balls.

The Troubies trailed 3-0 after the first quarter before getting on the board with back-to-back Miles scores in the second. Abalateo scored with less than a minute in the half, and Smith notched her lone goal with just :09 to go to bring SF to within a 6-4 deficit at halftime.

Miles and Hamm each scored twice in a span of 2:34 overall in the third, but St. Francis ultimately could not overtake its hosts. Abalateo scored the final Troubie goal with 23 seconds left in the fourth, but GB senior Sarah Radler won the ensuing draw to protect her team's one-goal lead for good.

The varsity loss followed a 7-1 setback for St. Francis in the junior varsity opener. No other information is available for that game.

Both Troubie squads return to action in a rare Friday night doubleheader in which they host Davis at 5:30 (JV) and 7:15 p.m. (varsity) at Mather Sports Complex.
