Troubie hoop drops road tilt at Oak Ridge

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Junior Lexi London scored 11 points while sophomore Layla Hernandez enjoyed a career-best night on the boards with 10 total rebounds, but St. Francis struggled to just 17.9 percent shooting as a team in falling, 64-27, to Oak Ridge in the girls' opener of the varsity-only Sierra Foothill League basketball doubleheader at Trojan Arena Friday night.

The Troubadours slip to 11-15 overall and sit fifth in the league standings at 5-7. The Trojans improve to 18-8 for the season and hold second place in the SFL at 10-2.

Hernandez doubled her previous varsity best with the 10 boards, but they accounted for almost half of just 21 total SF rebounds. She also tallied five points, matching that of senior Sydney Teoh. Junior Laila Mendoza led her team with four steals, with Teoh and Karly Okamoto each chipping in three. However, the Troubies shot just 10-for-56 from the floor, including 0-for-17 from beyond the three-point arc.

Hernandez also had the only St. Francis field goal in the first period, dropping in a shot off an Okamoto assist along the left edge of the key at the 5:13 mark. But OR sophomore Leah Harris scored seven in that frame to boost her team to an 18-7 lead through eight minutes. London's runner in the lane followed by Okamoto's steal and eight-foot jumper brought the score to 27-12 with 3:08 left in the first half, but Trojan post Kendra Alameda drew a foul on a putback on the next trip down.

Alameda made only the front end on her trip to the stripe, but that one throw began what eventually swelled to a 24-0 overall run. It also characterized the overall night for St. Francis: with the absence of Tayli Paeu-Lindgren to provide rebounding support, Oak Ridge's size resulted in numerous second, third and even fourth chances on offense. Alameda's follow at 4:27 in the third expanded the Trojans' 41-12 halftime edge to 51-12.

London and Hernandez managed second-chance scores of their own down the stretch of the third, then London turned a weakside rebound into two more points with 6:22 left in the third. She made it double figures with a drive at the 4:41 mark, but even that only reduced the overall deficit to 57-20. Mendoza provided one more late Troubie highlight, scoring a three-point play on a Teoh assist then making the and-one free throw with 1:34 to go.

Oak Ridge honored its eight seniors prior to the game, with injured Pacific commit Liv Yergensen getting to score a ceremonial lay-up to start the game. Further spurring the Trojans was that their victory marked No. 700 for head coach Steve White, who was given a standing ovation following the contest.

St. Francis enters its final week of the regular season, hosting Folsom in a doubleheader with the Troubie junior varsity on Tuesday before heading to Davis for another doubleheader with Jesuit on February 14. Tuesday's home finale begins at 6 p.m. for the jayvees, followed by a 7:30 tip for varsity.
