SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Lexi London scored a team-best 10 points while sophomore Tayli Paeu-Lindgren dominated the boards with 19 rebounds, but turnovers and shooting woes ultimately doomed St. Francis to a 54-29 loss against Del Oro in the varsity nightcap of Monday's Sierra Foothill League girls' basketball doubleheader.
The Troubadours slip to 9-13 for the season and begin the second half of the SFL season with a 3-5 league mark. The Golden Eagles, ranked third in Sac-Joaquin Section Division II by MaxPreps, improve to 14-8 overall and 5-3 in SFL play.
Overall, St. Francis shot just 10-for-42 from the floor for 23.8 percent while committing 34 total turnovers. London drained a pair of three-pointers in the first period, the second of which pulled the Troubies to within a 12-11 deficit with 22 seconds remaining. But Maddy Poe answered on the other end, beginning what grew to an 11-0 run. Bella Von Seipler assisted Poe on back-to-back interceptions during that stretch, which ended with DO holding a 23-11 edge.
Troubie post Layla Hernandez ended the scoreless stretch with her rebound and putback of a missed transition layup, but Von Seipler's right-side jumper and Lexi Haro's corner three restored the Eagle lead to 28-13. London's finger roll in the final seconds made it 28-15 going into the break.
St. Francis enjoyed a few highlights in the third period – Laila Mendoza beating the shot clock at 6:02 and Natalia Zitelli assisting Audrey Bashore two minutes later – but DO continued to stifle its host's offense. The Golden Eagles expanded its lead 45-21 in that stanza, with Von Seipler, Haro and Aleyna Estrada striking from long range.
The Troubies managed to slow down the Golden Eagles in the fourth while making some key plays of their own. London found Teoh for an open three early in the frame, Zitelli fought her way to a transition bucket with less than two minutes remaining, then Zitelli delivered the dime on a Bashore corner three on SF's next trip down. Still, Von Seipler's defense translated to enough DO opportunities to keep her team's advantage by at least 21 down the final stretch.
Bashore finished with five points and a pair of rebounds in just nine minutes on the court. Paeu-Lindgren's 19 rebounds represents her 15th game in double digits, and the most since she had an identical total against Oak Ridge 10 days prior. She now has 278 total for the season, bringing her closer to becoming the first Troubadour to amass 300 in a season since Lauren Craig performed the feat in 2013-14 (332) and 2014-15 (343).
St. Francis junior varsity also took on a formidable DO squad, falling by a 62-12 final. Freshman Lena Mundhenk led the younger Troubies with four points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Jocelyn Dickinson, Emmy Cheatham and Jocelyn Villaflor sank first-half field goals. However, SF shot 0-for-9 with just two total rebounds after the break.
Monday's doubleheader is the first of four basketball dates for the week. Both teams head to Granite Bay for a 6:00/7:30 p.m. twinbill, then JV travels to Whitney for a Thursday night tip. Varsity hosts the Wildcats on Friday night as part of a home doubleheader with the Jesuit-Whitney boys. The Troubies will honor seniors Sydney Teoh and Karly Okamoto prior to their 6 p.m. tip, while the Marauders will "host" the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m.
Note: previous schedules listed Friday's Senior Night doubleheader with 5:30/7:00 p.m. start times, as is standard for the SFL's boys-girls doubleheaders. However, scheduling conflicts and the pregame ceremonies necessitated a change to 6:00/7:30 p.m. Fans and media should adjust their schedules accordingly.
