JV volleyball captures CIVT championship

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – St. Francis swept Laguna Creek by scores of 25-19, 25-12 to capture the junior varsity edition of the Carmichael Invitational Volleyball Tournament, held at Capital Sports Center Saturday. Meanwhile, the Troubadour freshman team won five straight matches before falling to Holy Court rival Christian Brothers to place second in the CIVT's frosh division.

The SF junior varsity squad improves to 18-1 for the year. The frosh suffer their first loss, moving to 16-1 overall.

Each team played three matches in round-robin pool play before advancing to an eight team bracket. JV swept Cordova, Sheldon and Kennedy to start the day, then won 2-0 matches against each of Elk Grove and Vacaville in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. The Troubie frosh ran through Pleasant Valley, Deer Valley and Ponderosa in round-robin action, won in split sets against Franklin to open the bracket, then made quick work of Bret Harte to force the Holy Court rematch.

A full summary of scores is listed below. All three teams return to action on the road at Granite Bay on Monday for a Sierra Foothill League tripleheader. Frosh and JV play simultaneously at 5:30 p.m., then varsity follows the JV match.
