JV volleyball finishes off Eagles in straight sets

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Juniors Hailey Sutton and Sophia Palmeri each recorded double-doubles to help St. Francis battle back from a 2-1 match deficit en route to a 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 15-10 win at Pleasant Grove in the varsity nightcap of a non-league girls' volleyball tripleheader.

The Troubadours remain undefeated at 5-0.

The extended varsity win followed a pair of straight-set victories for the St. Francis frosh (25-22, 27-25) and junior varsity (25-12, 25-23) against the program's former Delta League foes.

Sutton finished with 13 kills while her 17 digs matched the team-best total of libero Malia Fat. She also had four of the Troubies' 16 aces, with Fat and Sidney Palmeri adding three apiece. The elder Palmeri tallied 11 kills with just two hitting errors on offense while scooping up 11 digs defensively. Junior Layla Hernandez enjoyed a strong night on the attack, posting an 8-2-19 chart for a .316 success rate.

St. Francis struggled to just .118 hitting in the third set to fall behind in the match, but rebounded to .265 (12-3-34) in the fourth to force the rubber set. Sophia Palmeri had three kills in the finale, with her tip managing to tool PG's right-side block for the overall winner. The Eagles also suffered to four attacking errors and four service errors in the fifth, much of which helped the Troubies craft a 10-3 lead.

Tuesday marked the second of two tripleheaders against Delta League members this week, as all three teams return to Elk Grove on Thursday for a 4:30/4:30/5:30 p.m. series at Franklin.
