SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Safaa Umar, Aniyus Pierre and Lauren Lai each picked up singles wins for St. Francis, but Granite Bay claimed the other three singles matches plus all three doubles victories to take a 6-3 win over the Troubadours in a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I girls' tennis championship first-round dual at Rio Del Oro Sports Club Tuesday afternoon.
Umar and Lai, two of SFHS's four seniors, scored straight-set wins. Umar dispatched Lila Bromfield at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-4; while Lai picked up her win over Aubrey Miller at No. 4 via a final of 7-5, 6-3. Pierre went split sets to defeat Michelle Han, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.
Chloe Garcia nearly claimed another team point for the Troubles at No. 5 singles but Anna Yu claimed a 10-6 tiebreaker after the two players traded 7-5 set scores.
Tuesday's match, which was pushed back from Monday's schedule due to inclement weather in Sacramento, closes out the St. Francis team season. However, Umar will compete in the Sac-Joaquin individual singles bracket by virtue of her runner-up finish in the Delta League.
The CIF-SJS singles tourney will run on Thursday and Friday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville, with representatives from the CCAL, CVC, Metro, SFL, SJAA, TCAL and Delta Leagues squaring off. Pairings will be determined via meeting on Wednesday.
