Red ends season on high note vs. Davis

Red ends season on high note vs. Davis
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Miley Blough scored a goal with 33:45 on the second-half game clock, or 47th minute, to lead St. Francis to a 1-0 win over Davis in the Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer finale at Cristo Rey Monday night.

The Troubadours finish the regular season with a 14-5-4 overall record, with a 6-4-4 mark in league play. The Blue Devils close out their SFL slate with a 6-3-5 record. This gives Davis a 23-22 edge in the final standings, with Del Oro (34) and Rocklin (28) clinching the top two spots.

However, the win maybe crucial for St. Francis for other reasons: Davis held 12th in the Sac-Joaquin Section and sixth in Division I, just one place ahead of the Troubies' 13th and seventh in MaxPreps rankings entering the contest. Thus, the outcome should figure into the SJS playoff brackets, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Blough's goal ended what had been a tight defensive battle for the entire first half. Sophomore Azaria Agbodike began the score with a cross from the left corner to Monet Zauner in the box. However, with Zauner's back turned toward the target, she opted to play the ball out to an open Blough. The Fresno State commit blasted the ball back for the score.

The Troubadours largely controlled possession, putting six of their eight shots on goal in the first half. Lily Hall had the first attempt on frame after the 0-0 halftime break, then Blough broke the scoreless tie.

Millie Katzeff and Mia Rabinovitz combined for the shutout as SF goalkeepers. Katzeff had four saves in her first half in net, then Rabinovitz had one in the second. Rabinovitz also charged out to snuff out two potential Davis shots in the last two minutes of her stint in the second half.

The varsity win followed a 2-2 draw for St. Francis' JV Red, a substantial improvement from the 3-0 loss suffered at Davis in mid-February. Anna Votaw and Gabrielle Angove figured on both goals. Angove assisted Votaw just 1:34 into the contest to put the Troubies on the board. Then three minutes after Blue Devil freshman Annabelle Ruud equalized, Votaw drew a foul in the top of the penalty box. Angove went to the mark and converted the go-ahead.

Unfortunately for SF, Ruud struck again in the 42nd, this time earning the assist to Eva Delarue. Davis enjoyed the majority of chances in the second half, with Jaycee Martinez notching three of her seven total saves. Grace Zylstra also blocked a shot after the Blue Devils' second goal, with Votaw halting Elsie Blankenship on a key tackle in the final seconds of the game.

The Troubies' JV Gold finished the night in heart-breaking fashion, despite two goals by sophomore Anna George. The speedy forward netted the game's first goal in the 22nd, only for Davis to notch scores in the 39th and 60th minutes to take a 2-1 lead.  After Hazel Pryor and Bridget Beard had close calls, George finished her brace on another counterattack in the 74th minute, or 6:40 left.

However, it took just 100 seconds for Davis to regain the lead for good. Abigail Lockard had the initial shot, which SF freshman Charlotte Gilmore dutifully blocked along the right side of the cage, only for Blankenship to come through with the follow on the left side of the goal mouth.

St. Francis had one last opportunity on a corner kick in the 76th. Mariko Palmieri had her shot blocked. Defender Sloane Street collected the rebound along the right side and attempted a put-back shot from about 30 yards, but it sailed high.

Monday marked the season finale for the two Troubie JV squads. Gold finished at 13-5-4 with a 7-4-3 SFL mark. Red wrapped the season at 3-12-6 with a 2-6-6 record in league.

St. Francis varsity's playoff fate will be announced at the section website (cifsjs.org), with more details at GoTroubies.com on Wednesday afternoon.
