Tateishi, Votaw strike early in 2-0 draw with GB
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Miley Blough scored a goal in the 48th minute then assisted Norah White on another in the 77th, helping St. Francis erase a 2-0 deficit and save a 2-2 draw against Granite Bay in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader at Adamson Family Sports Complex Tuesday evening.

The Troubadours move to 4-3-3 in league play, part of an 11-4-3 overall record. The Grizzlies are now 5-6-2 for the year, including 2-6-1 in SFL competition.

Granite Bay took the initial lead shortly before the midpoint of the first half, when Madison Castellanos knocked a shot into the right side of the cage off a corner kick. SF sophomore Tallas Schaedler appeared to have cleared the ball out but the shot was correctly ruled as having passed the plane of the goal mouth. The Grizzlies doubled their lead in the opening minute of the second half, thanks to Eden Bromfield's long ball from the left flank that managed to sneak beneath the crossbar.

SF, which held a 17-7 shot advantage in the first half, threatened immediately after sinking into that 2-0 hole. Senior Mia Nelson fired perhaps the hardest shot of the game in the 44th, only to get turned back by the Grizzly keeper. Junior Lacey Harmon fired a shot that GB sophomore Tatum Schrey blocked away a minute later. After a Grizzly handball call, Blough launched a free kick that barely missed over the cage in the 47th. Soon after, she had another shot on frame, only for GB goalkeeper Piper Brown to knock it over the crossbar.

However, Blough avenged this denial on the ensuing corner kick, sending the ball over Brown's outstretched hands and off the opposite post for a bar-in goal with 32:04 left in the contest.

St. Francis continued to earn opportunities, with 10 of the game's next 14 shots through the 70th minute. In the 74th, White was tripped up just above the penalty box, setting up a free kick for Blough. While that ball hooked wide of the target, the White-Blough tandem teamed up just two minutes later. Blough played a ball from near the penalty arc to White, who collected the ball near the left side above the box. White turned inward and drilled a shot that short-hopped the GB keeper for the equalizer.

White nearly had the go-ahead in the second minute of stoppage time, thanks to a long pass from Madeline Squaglia from the right sideline to the top of the box. White put a strong left foot on the shot, only for Brown to execute both a diving save and a quick gather of the loose ball.

The varsity draw followed an identical score between St. Francis' Red junior varsity squad and the Granite Bay frosh-soph in Tuesday's opener. Victoria Tateishi and Anna Votaw gave the Troubies a 2-0 lead at halftime, thanks to goals in the sixth and 34th minutes, respectively. Livi Daugherty earned the assist on the Votaw goal. That edge held up well into the second half before the Grizzlies scored on a free kick in the 69th and a putback in the 77th.

St. Francis' JV Gold ended up the only team to come away with a win as part of the home set, capturing a 2-1 victory in Tuesday's finale. Sloane Street hit a second-chance shot in the 25th, then Anna George found Andrea Silva on a pass from the right edge for a second goal in the 48th. The Troubies dominated possession for much of the second half, but did have their shutout bid spoiled on a long set piece in the 72nd.

JV Gold improves to 11-2-4 for the year with a 6-1-3 SFL record. JV Red's game marked the fifth tie of the year: 1-10-5 overall and 0-5-5 in league.

All three teams head up Interstate 80 to take on Whitney in continued league action on Thursday: Gold at 3:30, varsity at 5:30, Red at 7:15 p.m.
