JV basketball's tourney action rolls on Friday night

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The St. Francis junior varsity basketball teams continued tournament competition in two different cities Friday night, with JV Red coming away with a 41-32 win against Ponderosa at Kennedy High's Robby Nakamura Holiday Classic.

Alexis Heise led the Troubies with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Sydney Chow chipped in eight points, eight boards and five deflections. Lillian Vicio matched Chow's eight points, as did Caitlyn Lee, who sank a three-pointer in each of the first and fourth quarters.

Chow, who also played for the SF frosh volleyball team in the fall, earned the team's "Hard Hat Award" for defense and hustle. This honor, bestowed by JV Red head coach John Bashore, is based on rebounds, deflections, steals and drawn charges. In fact, the team looks at the overall Hard Hat points at halftime as a motivator for the second half in ecah contest.

Meanwhile, the JV Gold team lost a 51-48 heartbreaker to Heritage High (Brentwood). Sianna Squires led the Troubies offensively while Aubrey O'Donnell hit double figures on the boards for the first time in her career, while guards Emma Karamanoukian and Sydney Teoh contributed on both ends of the floor, according to head coach Melissa Triebwasser.
