Jaffe, 400 free relay advance at state championships

Jaffe, 400 free relay advance at state championships
CLOVIS, Calif. – Senior Erica Jaffe finished 11th in the 100-yard backstroke at 56.12 seconds, then led off the 400 freestyle relay to another 11th-place showing, highlighting St. Francis on Day 2 of the CIF State Swimming & Diving Championships at the Clovis Olympic Aquatics Center Friday afternoon. Jaffe joined Isabella Schmid, Mia Hill and Lilla Kapinya in that relay to compile a time of three minutes, 30.40 seconds.
The 100 back and 400 free relay were the only events in which the Troubadours earned second swims to Saturday's portion of the meet. Jaffe will look to surpass Lowell junior Amanda Vu (55.36) and Woodbridge sophomore Tanja Amizic (56.06) in the consolation finals. The 4x400 relay vie to overtake Carondelet (3:30.15) and Torrey Pines (3:30.37), the two higher seeds in Saturday's consols.

Jaffe also placed 21st in the 200 individual medley prelims at 2:05.06, while the sophomore Kapinya took 18th in the 50 free. Both Troubadours finished outside the top three in the Sac-Joaquin Section championships but posted high enough at-large consideration times at the May 9 finals to earn spots at state in their respective events.

Kapinya's 23.54 in the first heat of the 50 free now ranks second in school history, behind only Ava Chavez' relay split of 23.50 at the 2023 state meet. Kapinya finished fifth at the Sac-Joaquin Section meet with a 23.82 time, just shy of the automatic at-large standard of 23.70 but well ahead of the consideration cutoff of 24.35. With that time, she snared a spot in Saturday's consols.

Also representing St. Francis in the trials was the foursome of Jaffe, Landen Didriksen, Marissa Recio and Kapinya, which went 1:47.45 in the 200 medley relay for 24th place.

The state championship meet spans three days: diving on Thursday, swim trials on Friday, swim finals on Saturday. Diver Paige Vicente was the lone Troubadour to compete on Thursday, advancing to the semifinal round with a 20th-place 281.45 score on the 1-meter board.

Saturday's session begins at 10:30 a.m.
