SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis sophomore Savannah Hamilton captured the frosh-soph 500-yard freestyle and led off a winning 400 free relay squad while Gabriella McHugh enjoyed the best finish among Troubadour swimmers in the varsity events with her third place in the 50 free, highlighting the first day of action at the Rio Americano Invitational swim meet Friday.
Hamilton touched home with a time of six minutes, 11.94 seconds for the distance free event, while the relay squad – along with Elyse Pometta, Emma Dietrich and Maya Wenceslao – compiled a 4:14.16. Hamilton bested the 500 free runner-up Lily Hodges by almost 22 seconds (6:33.28), and had more than a full minute beyond the remainder of the field. Meanwhile, the 400 free relay enjoyed a winning margin of 3.82 seconds ahead of the host Raiders (4:17.98) with more than 45 seconds on third-place Christian Brothers (5:01.12).
McHugh entered the meet as a last-minute replacement for senior Erin Maeng, touching home in 27.22 seconds for third place among the 33-person field.
The Rio Invitational wraps action on Saturday, starting with the frosh-soph girls' 200 medley relay at 9 a.m. St. Francis has entries in both levels of the medley and 200 free relays, 200 free, 100 free and 100 backstroke.
