Troubies blank CKM on first day of Grizzly tourney

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Miranda Ferguson scored five goals, assisted in another, and drew two five-meter fouls that resulted in successful penalty shots by teammate Abigail Benavidez as St. Francis shut out McClatchy, 12-0, in the Day 1 finale of Granite Bay's Grizzly Classic girls' water polo tournament Friday at American River College.

The Troubadours move to 7-4 for the year.

St. Francis lost to Monte Vista of Danville by a 9-2 final earlier in the tournament day. Benavidez scored a goal then assisted Erin Maeng for her first varsity score in the 70 seconds of the third quarter.

Benavidez also had four goals against CKM, with Addison Hutchcraft, Audrey Ellis and Maeng for the remaining three tallies. Like Maeng in Friday's opener, Ellis netted her first goal as a Troubie freshman. Senior goalkeeper Sophia Santsche-Chavez earned 12 saves en route to the shutout, including two against five-meter penalty shots and even one against a rare two-on-nobody counterattack early in the second quarter.

In the win over the Lions, St. Francis ran up a 6-0 halftime lead and a 10-0 edge through the third before the running clock slowed down the scoring output in the fourth. Hutchcraft assisted Ferguson at two meters to start the contest then Ellis similarly found Benavidez at set with 1::18 left in the first.

Then to start the second, Ferguson stole the ball from CKM's three position, the swam straight to the Lion cage, only to get fouled before she could finish the counterattack. This put Benavidez on the stripe to convert the penalty shot. Ferguson drew another five-meter foul later in the second, this time from McClatchy goalie Claire Souverville on a rebounded shot. Again, Benavidez took the penalty shot and scored, extending the lead to 4-0.

Hutchcraft figured on the final two goals before halftime, assisting Ferguson at two meters with 1:37 left then completing a 6-on-5 chance with 22 ticks remaining.

Santsche-Chavez halted shot after shot to start the third, including one that very likely could have spoiled the shutout. In a scrum to corral an errant Troubie pass back to her, she accidentally held the ball underwater, resulting in a McClatchy penalty shot. The Troubie senior smothered the ensuing attempt, holding the Lions further scoreless.

Ferguson scored three goals while Benavidez added another down the stretch of the third, extending the SF lead to 10. At 5:46, Ferguson sent the ball up to Maeng at the 4-5 spot. Despite being a tough angle for a right-hander, Maeng heaved a ball cross cage and bar-in for her second goal of the game. Then with 2:15 left in the contest, Ellis had an even tougher angle for a righty, and still managed to find the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Santsche-Chavez protected her shutout by blocking a Charlotte Rattan attempt on a 6-on-5 chance. The Troubies also dodged a near miss earlier in the fourth: Lily Bock's shot clipped the left post and stopped dead on the water such that Santche-Chavez could quickly grab the ball before entering the cage.

The Troubies last shut out a team during the first weekend, with an 8-0 win over Willow Glen at the Central Valley Showdown on August 31.

St. Francis completes the Grizzly Classic back at host Granite Bay's pool on Saturday. The Troubies play just one game: a 12:20 p.m. matchup against Sanger, last year's County Metro Athletic Conference champions.
