EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Sophomore Azaria Agbodike assisted Miley Blough for the game's first goal, then had her cross redirected by a Trojan defender for an own goal in the first half, while Norah White found the back of the net in the 51st minute as St. Francis blanked Oak Ridge, 3-0, in the varsity portion of a Sierra Foothill League girls' soccer tripleheader Tuesday night.
The Troubadours snap a three-game winless streak to improve to 9-3-1 overall with a 3-2-1 record in league play. The Trojans drop their sixth straight contest to slip to 1-7 for the year, 0-6 in SFL competitions.
Blough's goal came via Holland Sperber in the penalty box. Agbodike had advanced up the right sideline and centered a cross to Sperber. However, Blough called for the pass, and Sperber dutifully tapped it to her adjacent teammate, who planted in the initial go-ahead with 5:30 left in the first half, or 35th minute.
Minutes later, Agbodike sent another cross toward Sperber and Norah White in the box. Instead, an Oak Ridge defender attempted to swoop in to intercept the pass from the SF attackers and in doing so, knocked the ball into her own goal. The Troubies went to the halftime break with that 2-0 edge, although two near misses in the 40th nearly added to the lead. Sperber had her own shot stopped by the Trojan goalkeeper. Then in the final seconds, Madeline Squaglia served a ball high up the field in an attempt to reach her front line. Instead, the ball sailed into the box, over the leaping OR keeper, and just over the crossbar.
Agbodike almost had a goal of her own in the 45th, when Blough passed up to Lily Hall to the speedy sophomore. The shot missed barely high, keeping the score at 2-0. Instead, the third and final goal belonged to White, who collected a pass from Hall about 10 yards above the box, roughly even with the women's lacrosse 12-meter fan markings. She stepped up and fired a shot into the net.
Meanwhile, goalkeepers Millie Katzeff and Mia Rabinovitz split the two halves, collecting four and three saves, respectively. Katzeff survived the closest scare when Macey Gaunt fired a shot in the 21st. Katzeff stopped the attempt but did not glove it. Instead, OR sophomore Kara Gordon came through with the follow, and Katzeff gloved that ball, too. Rabinovitz had two of her blocks against the dangerous Gaunt, then Squaglia stuffed a Sofia Giraudo shot along the left side in the 78th.
The varsity win followed a frustrating loss for JV Red, which dominated possession for most of the game, but surrendered a counterattack goal in the 42nd minute and a long set piece in the 73rd in a 2-1 loss to the Trojans. Gabrielle Angove led the Troubies with six shots, and scored the lone SF goal when her corner kick in the 51st found its way into the cage.
St. Francis' Gold jayvees played Oak Ridge to a 2-2 draw in the finale. The Troubies surrendered a goal just 2:53 into the contest, but answered with scores in the ninth and 21st minutes. Anna George converted a Cali Chambers outlet pass for the first goal, then Hazel Pryor knocked in a second-chance ball on a corner kick with 19:10 left before the half.
Then in the second half, the Trojan JV scored the equalizer in a similar fashion to its frosh-soph game-winner: a well-placed free kick that found the top shelf in the 50th. SF had its best chance to reclaim the lead in the 69th, when Chambers was tripped up in the penalty box. George went to the mark but her shot sailed above the cross bar.
Meanwhile, St. Francis keeper Alyssa Becze rebounded from the free kick goal by posting all six of her saves in the final 30 minutes of the game, with sophomore defender Elizabeth McNearney also coming up with a key blocked shot in the 76th.
All three Troubie squads return to action at Davis on Thursday. As is the league' Thursday format, JV Gold begins the tripleheader at 3:30, with varsity following at 5:30 and JV Red finishing the set with a 7:15 p.m. start.
