Troubies dominate Holy Sticks matchup

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Brynley Hodge scored eight goals with two assists while sophomore Karly Okamoto and Elizabeth Barger each netted hat tricks, leading St. Francis to an 18-3 win in the varsity nightcap of the annual "Holy Sticks" girls' lacrosse doubleheader at Peter P. Bollinger Stadium Monday night.

The Troubadours' junior varsity also dominated the Falcons, with Olivia Hamm delivering a double hat trick and Gianna Erdmann, Chloe Tanner and Olivia Alvernaz each adding three goals in a 23-2 drubbing in Monday's opener. The SF varsity improves to 3-2 for the year, while the JV squad moves to 3-1 overall.

St. Francis never trailed in either contest, with Okamoto assisting Barger on the opening goal before converting a trip to the eight-meter arc two minutes later, giving the Troubies a 2-0 start. Hodge completed her hat trick during the seven through 13th minutes, extending the lead to 5-1. She had six goals by halftime, while Barger scored in the 14th and 19th, boosting SF to a 13-2 edge at the break.

Hodge also had a game-high nine of her team's 15 total draw controls, while Barger led the way with three caused turnovers. Zia Smith chipped in two goals with three DCs, Louise Morr converted an assist from Smith early in the second half, and Keira Miles hit an eight-meter goal late in the first to account for the remaining SF scoring.

In the opener, the Troubies opened with a balanced attack: Hamm, Erdmann, Sofia Rabinovitz, Alvernaz, Lena Schnack and Mia Nelson scored in succession during the first 6:06 of play to kickstart a 6-1 lead. Hamm assisted Zoe Smith on a pair of goals in the 10th and 15th minutes while scoring four more of her own, as St. Francis held a 17-2 halftime lead.

Hamm opened the second half with her sixth goal of the game before yielding the offense to her teammates. Heidi Koenig had the lone CB goals, putting her team on the board off the draw in the fourth minute, then driving for the second in the ninth despite being a player down due to a yellow card a minute earlier.

Alvernaz completed her hat trick with just 14 seconds left in the contest. Both teams scrambled for a loose ball in front of the goal circle, and the Troubie sophomore knocked in the goal in a style more akin to a hockey wrist shot.

Nelson, Smith and Rabinovitz each finished with two goals. Brianna Akins converted an eight-meter chance for her second goal of the season.

Monday's doubleheader kicks off a busy week for Troubie lacrosse, with a league home game against Davis followed by a road game at Bella Vista on Friday. A doubleheader at Granite Bay, originally scheduled for Saturday, is now being rescheduled. Stay tuned to GoTroubies.com for updates.
