St. Francis jayvees fall short at Folsom

FOLSOM, Calif. – Senior midfielder Keira Miles performed her 10th career double hat trick, sophomore attacker Skye Smith added three goals and three assists, while freshman Cali Chambers led the defensive unit with five caused turnovers and five ground balls, helping St. Francis rally from an early 3-1 deficit to a 12-8 victory in Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse action at Prairie City Stadium Monday night.

The Troubadours improve to 6-3 for the year with a 5-3 mark in league play. The Bulldogs slip to 4-6 overall, 2-5 in SFL games.

Senior Jade Abalateo added two more goals with freshman Gillian Hamm chipping in one. Abalateo and Miles each scooped up three draw controls, although Folsom held a 16-8 advantage in that category. Fortunately, the play of Chambers and junior Natalia Zitelli (three CTs, three GBs) helped SF gain back those possessions throughout the contest.

The Troubies drew first blood in the contest on Hamm's goal four minutes after the opening draw, but the Bulldogs hit three unanswered to claim a 3-1 edge. Maya Reddy scored off the subsequent draw just eight seconds after Hamm's opener, then freshman Nora Friedrich netted back-to-back to give her team its two-goal margin. Friedrich prevented what would have been another Zitelli takeaway, then took that ball in for the 2-1 go-ahead. Then at the 5:59 mark in the first, she won a ground ball and delivered into a vacated goal.

With less than three minutes left in the first, Miles fired a shot off the pipe that Smith scooped up for a ground ball and a new SF possession. Miles then converted a Smith pass with 1:55 to halve the Bulldog lead to one tally. Then with just five ticks remaining in the first quarter, Abalateo converted an eight-meter for the 3-3 equalizer.

The two teams traded goals for ties at 4-4 and 5-5 in the second. Reddy took the opening draw straight to the cage to push Folsom up by one, only for Abalateo to slash through the arc to knot the game at the 11:05 mark. Bulldog senior Siena Kazinec hit an eight-meter to restore her team's lead at 5-4 with 7:33 to go, but that began a scoreless stretch for Folsom that lasted well past halftime. Meanwhile, St. Francis enjoyed a 5-0 run: Smith assisted Miles on a pick and roll to tie the score at 5-5 with 3:22, set up Miles again to give the Troubies the lead for good with 1:35 left in the half, then buried her first goal with a double-pump with just seven seconds remaining in the second.

Smith and Miles each poured in two goals in the third to build the SF lead to 11-7, with Kazinec and Anderson each scoring for Folsom right off the draw. Miles made it 12-7 with her goal at the 7:05 mark in the fourth. Hamm appeared to have scored a 13th Troubie goal, but a dangerous follow-through sent her to the sidelines, disqualified the goal, and wiped what would have been a Delaney McGahan assist. With a player advantage for the last 82 seconds of the game, Friedrich tacked on one more goal for the Bulldogs.

Miles now has three double hat tricks for the year: she scored eight goals at home against Folsom on March 5, then for six against Whitney just four days later. Furthermore, the Denver commit had games of six and seven goals against the Bulldogs in her junior season.

The varsity win followed a 6-3 loss for St. Francis junior varsity. Folsom led from start to finish, with each of the Troubie goals cutting the margin to one: Maura McManus' ground ball and coast-to-coast drive made it 2-1 with 1:32 in the first, Millie Katzeff's eight-meter conversion cut the Bulldog lead to 3-2 with 1:55 before halftime, then Bonnie Cohen's assist to Hope Sperber with 2:32 in the third pulled SF to within a 4-3 deficit. Meanwhile Claire Gabri logged eight total saves, with four in the final frame, but Samantha Olden and Alyssa Schuster added insurance goals for Folsom in the final three minutes.

St. Francis lacrosse returns to its Mather Sports Complex home turf on Thursday for continued SFL play against Rocklin. The doubleheader also features the annual Booster-Q, with free hamburgers and hot dogs to all in attendance, plus a Senior Night ceremony for seven 2026 graduates. Abalateo, Miles, Sara Ellis, Nevaeh Gavino, Elle Lofing, Mia Nelson and Lena Schnack will be recognized with their families between the JV (5:30) and varsity (7:15) games.
