Jayvees start strong against powerful Oak Ridge
MATHER, Calif. – Senior midfielder Keira Miles netted three goals for her 26th consecutive hat trick while leading her team with four draw controls, while Jade Abalateo and Gillian Hamm each finished with a goal and an assist, but St. Francis fell to Oak Ridge, 14-6, in the varsity nightcap of Thursday night's Sierra Foothill League girls' lacrosse doubleheader at Mather Sports Complex.

The Troubadours slip to 5-3 for the year with a 4-3 record in league play. The Trojans, ranked No. 3 in the Sac-Joaquin Section by MaxPreps, improve to 7-3 overall and 5-1 against the SFL.

Eleven of the 20 total goals came from the eight-meter arc: four by St. Francis and seven by Oak Ridge. Sophomore Skye Smith had the first Troubie goal in precisely that situation less than two minutes into the second quarter, reducing the deficit to 3-1. Miles scored twice from said free position in the third quarter, the second of which brought the score to 10-4.

Miles then completed her hat trick on a feed from Abalateo with 35 seconds remaining in the game. This continues a streak of games with at least three goals since she hit four in a 16-3 win over Vista Del Lago back on April 24, 2024. The future Denver Pioneer now has 37 on the year, matching her entire sophomore season total, and 173 for her career.

Hamm assisted Abalateo on a goal with 6:09 in the third, then scored an eight-meter of her own after a slow whistle at the 8:10 mark in the third. Smith and Abalateo added two draw controls with Hamm picking up another, but Oak Ridge held a 15-9 advantage in the circle. The Trojans never trailed in the contest, opening with three unanswered, holding a 5-1 halftime lead, then extended their edge to as much as 12-4 by the 9:18 mark in the fourth.

Freshman Britten Sires matched her career high of eight saves, four in each half.

The varsity setback followed an 11-1 loss for the St. Francis junior varsity, with Maura McManus scoring her first career goal. McManus also notched two caused turnovers to match Hope Sperber and Millie Katzeff in that department. The Troubies held ORHS close to just a 3-1 deficit until surrendering a fourth shortly before halftime. The Trojans then netted five in the third quarter plus two crease rolls near the end of the fourth to pull away.

St. Francis returns to action with a Monday night road game at Folsom. First draws are 5:30 (JV) and 7:15 p.m. (varsity). This contest was originally slated for early April, but moved up to March 23 to avoid a conflict with St. Francis' spring break.
