SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis High girls' lacrosse drew a No. 10 seed and will open the North Coast Section Division I tournament at Marin Catholic in Kentfield, the section office announced Sunday. First draw is 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3.
The Troubadours enter Tuesday's playoff with a 14-5 overall record. They finished 11-1 in Delta League play, sharing the top of the standings with Davis. This is also the program's highest seed in the NCS bracket since 2013, then St. Francis claimed the No. 9 spot.
The seventh-seeded Wildcats went 16-3 for the year and perfect in the Marin County Athletic League at 8-0. This is the first North Coast Section playoff since 2019, as the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the tournaments in both 2020 and 2021.
St. Francis has enjoyed one of its best seasons in the last decade, scoring the first wins over area powerhouses Davis and Granite Bay since 2013. Several Troubies have enjoyed historical seasons, with sophomore Brynley Hodge and senior Zahra Smith leading the offense with 54 goals each. This puts each of them just two scores away from surpassing the school record, held jointly by Katie Ku (2008) and Hayley Kusserow (2014). Smith also cracked the century mark in draw controls, entering Tuesday with 102 for the year. Only Sophia Gorona (2018, 2019) and Sarah Westover (2017) have won more in a season.
On the opposite end of the field, senior goalkeeper Bella McCullough has 120 saves against 112 goals for a .517 average. The William Penn-bound Elk Grove product also earned one of 18 roster spots on the Mexico Women's National Team, which competes at the 2022 World Lacrosse Women's World Championship this summer.
The Sac-Joaquin Section does not yet sponsor a girls' lacrosse champions, so teams from the Delta League and Sierra Foothill League travel to the Bay Area to compete as part of the NCS during the postseason. No. 5-seed Davis heads to No. 12 Monte Vista, No. 8 Vista Del Lago visits No. 9 California, No. 3 Oak Ridge goes to No. 14 College Park. The NCS champion will be crowned on May 12.
