SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sydney Teoh scored a game-high 10 points while Emma Karamanoukian came off the bench to funnel in eight more, helping St. Francis outlast Pleasant Grove, 45-27, in the varsity nightcap of a home basketball tripleheader at the SFHS main gym Tuesday night.
The varsity win capped a sweep for the Troubies, as the JV Red led off the night with a balanced attack to beat Kennedy by a 46-14, then JV Gold scored 38 unanswered to start the game in a 60-12 victory over the Eagles' jayvees in the middle contest.
St. Francis varsity improves to 11-3 for the year, while Gold and Red move to 9-3 and 10-4, respectively.
In addition to the two guards, senior Emily Dusel hit 3 of 5 from the floor with team highs of five rebounds and six steals. Chidera Okoye also drained three field goals while adding four boards. The Troubies largely won on the strength of their defense, holding PG to just four points in each of the first two quarters en route to a 27-8 halftime edge.
Karamanoukian scored three times in the second period, while senior Sophie Harris also provided a spark late before the halftime break: she drew a charge down low on the defensive end, buried a 19-footer on a kickout from Okoye on the next trip up the court, then later assisted Karamanoukian on an in-bounds play 48 seconds before the intermission.
The Eagles rallied in the fourth period, with Emily Bowman driving the lane three times in the first four minutes and Marissa Perkins scoring twice down the final 2:41. However, Teoh scored all four of her baskets in that same frame, including a pull-up jumper along the right edge that restored the SF lead to 42-22 with 3:32 to go.
In the JV Gold win, post Perpetua Nwaukoni notched a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Twelve of those boards came on the offensive end, providing the Troubies with numerous second- and third-chance opportunities. Meanwhile, freshman guard Colleen Medina added 10 points and had six of her team's 20 steals.
St. Francis scored 25 points in the first period alone, including eight by Medina, then extended its run to 38 unanswered through nearly the entirety of the second stanza. Alexis Heise hit two putbacks in the second to bring the score to 38-0. Only a PG three-pointer with seven seconds left prevented a second shutout quarter for the Troubies.
Gold's win followed a Red victory in which Lucia Vicio scored four straight field goals as part of a 23-2 overall run spanning from midway through the first period to the 1:24 mark in the second. St. Francis led 26-6 at the halftime break and 39-8 through three quarters, getting a balanced scoring effort from Vicio (10 points), Annie Swanson (9), Gianna Seghesio (9), Abbey Pavelchik (9) and Lauren Herbelin (8).
The St. Francis JV Gold and varsity squads continue Delta League play at Sheldon on Friday, while JV Red remains slated to travel to Nevada Union for a 4:30 road tip on Wednesday. If that contest is canceled due to the expected storm, the youngest Troubie squad returns to action at Folsom on Thursday, January 12. Families should stay tuned to FinalForms while all fans will see updates via social media and GoTroubies.com as soon as a decision is made about Tuesday's Troubies-Miners tilt.
