SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Colleen Medina posted eight stops, including one for a loss, plus a 23-yard interception return, but St. Francis suffered from four interceptions of its own in falling by a 12-0 final to Del Oro in the varsity finale of a Sierra Foothill League flag football game at Jesuit's Marauder Stadium and Shane Barnes '07 Field Thursday night.
The Troubadours dip to 18-6 for the season with a 7-5 record in league play. The Golden Eagles improve to 8-7 overall, and now share third place in the SFL standings with a matching 7-5 mark.
Medina's pick came late in the first quarter, shortly after a near interception by Monet Zauner. Zauner tallied seven deflaggings of her own, and matched Holland Sperber with two pass breakups. For her part, Sperber also pulled seven flags, including two for sacks. Abbey Pavelchik and Tayli Paeu-Lindgren also defended against DO passing attempts.
Unfortunately, SF struggled on offense, with a 29-yard pass from quarterback Natalia Zitelli to Zauner standing as the longest passing play. Zitelli also found Paeu-Lindgren for grabs of 14 and 15 yards early in the contest, but no Troubie managed to reach the end zone.
Meanwhile, Del Oro broke the scoreless tie midway through the second quarter on a 63-yard punt return touchdown. The Golden Eagles tacked on their second score with 3:43 remaining in the third on a fourth-and-goal from the St. Francis 11, completing a corner route against the Troubies' double coverage.
The contest also served as Senior Night for 10 SF '26 grads: Jade Abalateo, Nevaeh Gavino, Lauren Herbelin, Medina, Pavelchik, Sperber, Annie Swanson, Lucia Vicio, Amelia Zaragoza, plus manager Cassandra Salvucci – the latter of whom got to suit up and play in the game.
All 10 seniors took part in a pregame ceremony and even performed the national anthem as a group.
Prior to the varsity contest, Del Oro pieced together a 13-6 win over the St. Francis junior varsity. Freshman Chloe Hoertsch hit Anna Votaw on a 14-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter, but the Troubadours fell short of erasing a 13-0 deficit from two Lu Balao rushing scores on either side of halftime.
St. Francis concludes its SFL and regular season with road visits to Whitney (Tuesday) and Folsom (Thursday). Tuesday's doubleheader runs at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. for JV and varsity, respectively.
