DAVIS, Calif. – Junior Natalia Zitelli ran in two second-half touchdowns in her season debut at quarterback while Alexa Randall and Monet Zauner scored on a sweep and a "pick six" interception return, respectively, as St. Francis shut out Davis by a 25-0 final in the varsity finale of a Sierra Foothill League girls' flag football doubleheader at Ron & Mary Brown Stadium Thursday night.
The varsity win followed a nearly identical 26-0 final score for the Troubadours' junior varsity in the opener. Varsity wins its fourth straight to improve to 17-3 overall with a 6-2 SFL record. The jayvees extend their unbeaten streak to seven games in moving to 11-1-1 for the year, 6-1-1 in league play.
Zitelli handled the majority of snaps in the absence of Lola Fox, Jade Abalateo and Taylor Mitchell. In fact, St. Francis played so short-handed that team manager Cassandra Salvucci lined up on defense on multiple series, and even came up with a stop near the end of the third quarter.
The Blue Devils actually had the first big play of the game, with senior Sonia Clayton wrestling a ball from SF receiver Tayli Paeu-Lindgren for an interception at midfield with about 2:30 remaining in the scoreless first frame. However, Davis went three and out. Randall returned the subsequent punt, then Zitelli ran the ball 17 yards into DSHS territory as the quarter came to an end.
On the first play of the second quarter, Randall collected a handoff from Annie Swanson, evaded Clayton's deflagging attempt near the Davis 30, then ran untouched along the left sideline to the end zone for the contest's first scoring play.
Then on the ensuing Davis series, a toss to senior Melia Ackerman brought the Blue Devils into the red zone for a first-and-goal on the SF 17. Davis quarterback Arisa Mendricks moved her team a few ticks closer, checking down to Lily Schneider then scrambling her way to the 14 for a fourth-and-goal. That's when Zauner jumped the route over the middle near her own 5-yard line. With plenty of daylight in front of her, Zauner opted not to bat the ball down but rather intercept and return the ball for the full 74 yards and the touchdown.
Zauner later posted her second pick shortly after the two-minute warning of the first half.
Swanson set up Zitelli's first touchdown run at the 7:14 mark in the third quarter, returning a punt all the way to the Davis 14. Zitelli ran the ball for another 12 yards to the 2-yard line, then her center sneak halved the distance for a third-and-goal. She followed with the final plunge with 3:14 left, extending the SF lead to 19-0.
Zitelli tacked on a second touchdown after the two-minute warning of the fourth. Two plays after converting a fourth-and-4, she rumbled 43 yards for her team's fourth score with 1:45 left, bumping the lead to 25-0. Senior Lucia Vicio posted a sack and a quarterback hurry against Mendricks to help wind down the final 105 seconds of the win.
In the JV opener, freshman quarterback Chloe Hoertsch connected with Julia Tipton and Cali Chambers for passing plays of 55 and 15 yards for a 14-0 halftime lead. The Mariko Palmieri handed off to Anna Votaw for a long punt return touchdown with 6:13 remaining in the third, making it 20-0 in the Troubies' favor. Finally, Hoertsch connected with Votaw for a 27-yarder to advance to the Davis 5, before Hoertsch ran the ball twice for the game's final TD.
Votaw continued on to record a tackle for loss and the second of her two sacks to halt the Blue Devils in their last chance with the ball.
St. Francis returns to action for a road SFL doubleheader at Rocklin on Tuesday. Game times are 6:15 (JV) and 7:30 p.m. (varsity).
