St. Francis Wins Second Consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner's Cup

St. Francis Wins Second Consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner's Cup

The St. Francis athletic program won its second consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner's Cup as the top all-around athletic program in the section based on comprehensive excellence in interscholastic competition. The Troubadours have achieved this title two of the three years since its inception in 2017-18.

"We are grateful to the Sac-Joaquin Section office for this recognition," said Athletic Director Mark McGreevy. "It's a significant achievement that reflects the dedication and efforts of a great many people, most especially our talented Troubadour student-athletes and their supportive families.  We extend hearty congratulations to our Troubies, for their impressive athletic achievements but more importantly how they represent our beloved school community with grace, sportsmanship, sisterhood, and a healthy competitive spirit."

Gotroubies.com asked student representatives from each of the five contributing teams how this achievement and their team's accomplishments leading up to this award made them feel? At release time we heard back from three students. Tennis senior Alisha Anwar said, "I feel honored and very proud of my team that we were able to contribute to this great achievement. After the hard work we've spent playing on the court and building our sisterhood, I feel blessed to have played with such an amazing team."

When asked about how she feels about this award Soccer Senior Jackie Stanco said, "I am beyond excited and happy for this accomplishment because I think Saint Francis has a great athletic department that deserves a lot of credit. There are so many factors that play a part in why we have such successful sports teams and happy that we are getting recognized for our hard work!"

Senior golfer Haanya Naizi continued the praise, "This is really exciting news! I am really proud of what the golf team was able to accomplish last season. We remained undefeated during the regular season, we were league champions, and we also made it all the way to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament. We had an amazing group of girls and even achieved a goal that we have been striving for since I joined freshman year: 4 players received an All Delta League Award. I would also like to note that our amazing coaches, Kelli and Chloe, were instrumental in our successes, teaching us how to better play the sport. To hear that we not only achieved all this, but we also contributed to St. Francis winning the Commissioner's Cup is incredible. I am beyond happy for myself, my team, and my school!"

St. Francis earned 22 points for the girl's crown outpacing second-place Oak Ridge by 3 points. The Troubadours won Section championships in volleyball, cross country, and soccer with tennis, golf, and water polo all contributing to the overall point total. Due to COVID-19, only the fall and winter sports were taken into consideration for this year's points.

The winners are determined by a points system that includes five points for a Section championship, three points for a Section runner-up placing, two points for making the SJS semifinals or placing third, and one point for placing fourth in a team-place finish sport.

The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section oversees high school athletics for 197 schools and 225,000 students. Its geographic boundaries stretch from Merced in the south, Grass Valley in the North, Napa to the west, and the Nevada state line to the east. The Section is the second-largest of California's 10 athletic sections.

The Troubadours also led the Delta League for the girl's all-sports championship as well, however, the league decided not to confer the award after the COVID shutdown of Spring sports. St. Francis claimed league titles in cross country, golf, tennis, and volleyball.
