JV volleyball remains undefeated in league midway through season

DAVIS, Calif. – Sophomore outside hitter Hailey Sutton posted a team-high 14 kills with just two errors for a .375 average on offense plus nine digs on floor defense, leading St. Francis to a 26-24, 25-23, 25-21 win over Davis in the varsity finale of Monday's Sierra Foothill League girls' volleyball tripleheader.

The Troubadours improve to 16-7 for the season, and 4-3 in league matches. The Blue Devils drop to 12-6 overall with a 1-6 SFl mark.

Sophomore Sophia Palmeri posted an 8-1-21 attacking chart for a .333 success rate, while middle blocker Mercy Collier chipped in another five kills with just one error. As a team, St. Francis hit a robust .284 for the match, with Nika Jafari (17 assists) and Sydney Chow (13) handling the majority of reps at setter. Jafari also served up four of her team's seven aces, while Chow served up seven straight points to propel the Troubies to a 13-4 lead early in the third. Chow also scored the final point of the match, when her dump fell into an open area of Davis real estate.

Additionally, senior Gabrielle Rowe contributed on four of the eight SF blocks, with Isabella Ramos tallying another two. Three of these stuffs took place during Chow's serving run in the third.

Sutton's hitting became particularly timely at the end of the second set, with SF falling into a 23-20 hole. She scored three kills in a run of five unanswered to reclaim that set and preserve the sweep.

Prior to the varsity finale, St. Francis frosh and junior varsity each won in straight sets. Frosh claimed the two frames by 25-17 and 25-23 scores, with JV prevailing even more decisively with wins of 25-7 and 25-16.

The match at Davis concludes the first half of the SFL schedule, with St. Francis sitting in fourth place. The Troubies return to action for a Wednesday home match with Rocklin, the league's lone undefeated squad at 7-0. Match times are 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m.
