Freshman Basketball, Varsity Volleyball Teams Garner St. Francis’ Top Team GPA Honors

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The 2017-18 St. Francis freshman basketball team coached by Mike Kelly and the Varsity volleyball team coached by Alynn Wright were the top teams taking home the St. Francis Booster Club Team GPA Awards for the 2017-18 seasons.

The Frosh hoops team posted the top overall team GPA in the athletic department with a cumulative 3.808, while the volleyball team had the top mark for the 12 varsity teams at 3.609.

"I check academic eligibility six times a year and am always impressed by our students and their efforts to balance the demands of a premier college preparatory school with high-level high school sports," said Athletic Director Mark McGreevy.  "Working with our Boosters Club this past year, we thought it would be fitting to celebrate these efforts with this contest and show our pride in their achievements.  It's our hope that it inspires the girls to support each other in the process as well."

The top five varsity teams were led by the volleyball squad with tennis (3.602) coached by Kristi Spector and cross country (3.601) led by Aaron Rios in second and third. Varsity soccer, who is coached by alumna Maryclaire Robinson, compiled a 3.55 cumulative team GPA and golf led by Bert Jones was right behind them at 3:544.

Among the non-varsity teams behind the freshman basketball unit, the Junior Varsity Red soccer team coached by Alex Hoang had a 3.69 GPA with alumna Taryn Wright's JV volleyball team at 3.674. The JV cross country team had a 3.671 and JV basketball led by Gary Ender posted a 3.605 to round out the top five.

The annual Team GPA Award winners will be recognized by the Booster Club with a permanent plaque in the Athletics lobby.

The awards were inspired by the adoption of a Team Academic Champion award at the section level for each varsity sport. St. Francis was recognized with three teams among the Sac-Joaquin Section Team GPA leaders during the 2017-18 season.

The cross country team ranked fifth (3.601) in the fall sport team championship, while the lacrosse team (3.389) won the spring title for their sport and the track and field team was second overall (3.481) among all section track and field teams.
