SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Sara Ellis scored a brace while Penelope Cole, Aubrey Lesnau and Mia Nelson each added one goal each, as St. Francis Red junior varsity squad shut out Folsom, 5-0, in girls' prep soccer action at Cristo Rey High Monday afternoon.
The Troubadours win their third straight game by a clean sheet, improving to 4-2-1 overall.
Cole scored the first goal of the game, collecting a loose ball on a corner kick on the right side of the box, then sending it home in the 13th minute. Nelson then netted back-to-back scores on almost identical forms, she advanced half the field along the left edge before turning in toward the goal mouth for the finish. She scored in the 25th and 32nd, lifting SF to a 3-0 halftime edge. Nelson's second goal seemed to head in the direction of Audrey Deelstra, but instead had just enough of an angle to catch the side net of the goal.
Lesnau made in 4-0 midway through the second half, teaming with Deelstra on a counterattack in the 61st. Finally, Ellis hit the fifth goal on a header. Brooke Larkin sent a free kick directly into the middle of the box, and Ellis put a head on it, as if intending to stall the ball for a shoot to her feet. Instead, it broke forward and straight into the net.
Oddly, one of the best Troubie shots of the game did not result in a goal. In the 73rd, Ava Larkin's corner kick made its way well outside the box to Gianna Aragon, who lofted the ball over the top cross-cage, out of the reach of the goalkeeper toward the left side. The shot glanced off the inside of the frame but never entered.
Monday's game is the first of two contests this week at Cristo Rey for JV Red, which normally plays its home games on the campus grass field. The Troubies host Rocklin for a 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
