Troubies open SJS playoffs against Mustangs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis has earned the No. 4 seed and will open against 13th-seeded Mountain House in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II girls' softball championship tournament, the section office announced Friday. The game takes place at the Troubadours' Schuster Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Troubadours hold a 14-12 overall record and finished 8-4 in Delta League play, good for a three-way tie for second place along with Elk Grove and Franklin. The Mustangs (15-10) tied for the Western Athletic Conference championship with an 11-3 record, joining Los Banos and Ceres atop the standings.

St. Francis owns a potent offense that enters the postseason with a .321 batting average, .382 on-base and .465 slugging. Four players have an OPS of better than 1.000: Kylee Garrett (.444/.475/.625)), Francesca Guerrera (.398/.432/.590), Alex Garcia (.422/.448/.566) and Hailey Strange (.333/.391/.619).

Similarly, Mountain House is batting .379 as a team with 70 extra-base hits en route to a .521 average and .985 overall OPS. Leading the way is senior catcher Kaiya Simmons, who finished the regular season batting .564 (44-for-78) with team highs of 11 doubles, four triples and seven homers.

The Troubies struggled to start the season but have gone 14-6 after the first month, posting wins over Del Oro and Sheldon plus a season series sweep against Franklin. They have reached the section title game four times, with a championship in 1986 and runner-up finishes in 1995, 1996 and 2022.
